The Opportunity

We are currently seeking Power Protection & Control Service Technicians to join our Maintenance Department team in Sudbury, Ontario. Relocation will be required for this role.

This is a permanent on-site position working Monday to Friday, steady days. This posting is for an existing position vacancy.

As a Power Protection & Control Service Technician, you will be responsible for designing, installing, inspecting, constructing, modifying, repairing, calibrating, testing, maintaining, and adjusting all types of high voltage power distribution and generation protection and control systems, metering, relaying and electronic equipment as well as the commissioning of sub stations, transformers and related equipment. Your experience and skills will contribute to scheduled or emergency repairs, and preventative maintenance work to be done in the shop or field.

Additionally, in this position you will:
  • Obtain wiring diagrams, drawings, specifications, work orders and instructions covering scheduled and emergency repair by use of computers, intranet and manufacturer for installation and inspection work to be done in shop or field.
  • Analyze and redesign all types of circuits, wiring diagrams and drawings as required to install, inspect, repair, adjust, calibrate, test, construct, modify or service all types of electronic devices, power and distribution control equipment, protective relaying, metering, equipment and high voltage and low voltage system elements.
  • Align with work safety policies and safety regulations.

About You

Qualifications:

  • Trade Certification: An inter-Provincial Red Seal (Certificate of Qualification) as a Maintenance Electrician (309A) is considered an asset.
  • Completion of Mearie School or other utility accreditation considered an asset.


Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of field experience as a Protection Control Technician or Substation Electrician required.


Skills:

  • Uses SAP system to create work orders, input time, order material and make reports.
  • Creates sketches of parts and layouts; modifies and fabricates parts or adoptions of component parts in field in or shop using power or hand tools.
  • Plans and performs work requiring through knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, electrical codes and regulations, properties of various materials and principal of operation and application of equipment.
  • Reading and understanding electrical schematics.
  • Experienced in working with microprocessor-based protection relays used in power system protection and control applications. Skilled in relay configuration, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance for transmission and distribution systems. Familiar with interpreting protection schemes, analyzing relay operations, and ensuring compliance with utility and industry standards to maintain system reliability and safety.
  • Proficient in the use of specialized test equipment required for Protection and Control work, including relay test sets, multimeters, insulation resistance testers, circuit analyzers, Ratiometers and Power Factor Units. Experienced with conducting relay functional testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and verification of protection schemes using equipment such as OMICRON, MEGGER and DOBLE test systems. Skilled in interpreting test results and diagnosing equipment issues.
  • Experienced in installing, testing, troubleshooting, and verifying revenue metering systems, including meters, current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), and associated wiring, while ensuring compliance with utility standards and industry requirements.
  • Breaker and Transformer maintenance, CT wiring and testing.
  • Comfortable with working at heights (approx. 50ft), working outside in all climates.
  • Experience with computer applications for industrial operations (e.g., RTUs, PLCs, IEDs).
