Job SummaryThis position involves quantum information science research. The main task is to develop theory and methods in applied quantum information science. This may include theory and analysis of quantum characterization protocols, developing such protocols, investigating the behavior of differently randomized protocols and circuits, and specification of test problems for comparing performances of quantum and classical computing systems.
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be - Engage with researchers in quantum information theory and experiment.
- Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
- Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
What You Should KnowThis position requires the successful completion of an NAIS agreement and federal security clearance as mandated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Employment is contingent upon approval of these requirements as determined by NIST.
Anticipated start date is December 26, 2026. A nticipated end date is March 31, 2028.
What We Can Offer - The salary range for the full-time Postdoctoral Associate position is $74,000 - $108,000 annually.
- The salary range for the full-time Research Associate position is $78,000 - $135,000 annually.

What We Require - Postdoctoral Associate: PhD in Physics or a related field with 0 - 4 years of post-doctoral degree experience.
- Research Associate: PhD in Physics or a related field with 5+ years of post-doctoral degree experience.
What We Would Like You to Have - Experience with theoretical quantum information science research.
- Familiarity quantum information theory and its applications.
- Familiarity with quantum physics simulation.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
