Planning & Optimization Engineer (Martinez Renewables)

Job Summary

Marathon Martinez Renewables has an immediate opening for a Planning & Optimization Engineer. This role is part of a team responsible for the development, optimization, and execution of production and logistics planning for Martinez Renewables, a joint venture between Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC) and Neste. MPC operates the facility, with feedstock supply and product offtake requirements shared between the JV partners.

The Planning & Optimization Engineer plays a key role in coordinating renewable product movements while supporting planning, scheduling, and optimization of refinery operations. This position ensures alignment between production, logistics, and commercial objectives to maximize site performance and maintain product quality compliance. This role reports to the Economics & Planning Manager and is based at the Martinez Renewables Facility.

The position follows either a 5/40 or 9/80 schedule, must be able to handle after hour calls that can be handled over the phone and possible turnaround (TAR) support when needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate renewable product planning, scheduling, and reconciliation.
  • Manage product logistics across all distribution channels (tank inventory, pipeline transfers, vessel movements, truck rack, and rail operations).
  • Optimize dock scheduling in coordination with refinery and JV stakeholders.
  • Ensure optimal daily inventory positioning and execution of offtake plans; identify and communicate deviations.
  • Communicate short-term production forecasts (~30-60 days) to JV partners and support reconciliation and reporting.
  • Act as Product Quality Coordinator, ensuring compliance with renewable product specifications.
  • Support RIN generation activities in coordination with MPC Compliance.
  • Develop and maintain refinery production and inventory plans using scheduling tools (e.g., Aspen Petroleum Scheduler).
  • Drive process unit rate targets and align execution with site production plans.
  • Identify and execute opportunities to improve product quality, blending, and operational efficiency.
  • Support planning studies, scenario analysis, and LP-based optimization activities.
  • Identify operational and logistical constraints and develop solutions to improve site performance.
  • Interface with Operations, Technical, Commercial, and JV stakeholders to align plans and execution.
  • Provide backfill support for broader planning and optimization responsibilities, as needed.


Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering discipline. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Must have a minimum 3 years of experience in production planning, scheduling, process/operations engineering, or product control experience in a refining, petrochemical, or related heavy industry.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery, be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel requirement up to 5%.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with refinery planning and scheduling tools (e.g., ASPEN APS, or similar systems) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with linear programming models and refinery optimization workflows is preferred.
  • Experience with product quality management and blending optimization is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze operational data and drive performance improvements is preferred.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Operations, Technical Services, and Commercial teams is preferred.
