Description of WorkThis Engineer position works in the Pavement Design Section of the Materials and Tests Unit of NCDOT. The Pavement Design Section is responsible for providing all 14 NCDOT Highway Divisions with pavement engineering, including design, materials evaluation, performance analysis, and economic analysis for both new and existing pavement structures on all state-maintained routes.
This position involves both office and field work. The Pavement Design & Analysis Engineer will analyze geotechnical data, current and future traffic information, construction phasing, and roadway plans to develop alternate designs for new pavements. After the pavement alternatives are selected based on constructability and life-cycle cost, the Pavement Design & Analysis Engineer will work with the Roadway Designer to implement the pavement designs in project plans, then check the plans for errors and, if registered as a Professional Engineer, seal the plans.
The field work includes moderate exposure to traffic hazards, and exposure to adverse weather conditions. The Pavement Design & Analysis Engineer conducts field investigations to formulate pavement rehabilitation recommendations. Such field investigations entail the use of the falling weight deflectometer, the dynamic cone penetrometer, coring, and visual observation to determine the structural and functional conditions of the existing pavement.
The Pavement Design & Analysis Engineer will participate and assist NCDOT research projects in Pavement and Materials.

- Demonstrated ability reviewing and interpreting highway construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations to resolve technical design problems for staff and offer technical advice to construction and maintenance personnel in the Divisions.
- Demonstrated ability to review engineering recommendations, plans, and details prepared by others to determine compliance and compatibility with construction principles, design standards, and statutes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and coordinate with other technical disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience working with asphalt and concrete pavements and materials.
Additional Expectations:
Must have the ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at highway construction projects.
Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle.
