Full Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Partner for our Asset Management Team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in managing venture-backed technology companies and mergers and acquisitions, exceptional leadership skills, and a strategic mindset. You will work with company management and other investors to help portfolio companies position themselves for value creation. Where required, you will be BDC's representative on boards of portfolio companies and will work to align board members, investors and management on company strategy and a strategy for the investment, including monetization. POSITION OVERVIEW Partners actively participate in the leadership of our funds, supporting the Managing Partner by leading investment transactions, taking responsibility for the overall portfolio performance, and participating in the fund's strategy formation and evolution. In this role, you will be one of the main representatives of your fund, managing a portfolio of investments, representing BDC on the board, aligning the board and investors on a growth and eventual monetization path, leading rigorous and fact-based due diligence, leading syndication as necessary and executing qualified financing and divestiture transactions that ultimately shape the future of Canadian economy. This position requires a seasoned perspective on deal-making, and top-notch ability to build partnerships within the investment community, presenting BDC Capital as a first-class investor to companies, corporates, LPs and other GPs. CHALLENGES TO BE MET Platform Building • Support the Managing Partner in the team's general management • Contribute to identifying internally, hiring externally, and developing high-quality team members • Foster a high performing team environment within the internal fund built on trust, collaboration, and high aspirations • Contribute to Asset Management Group's ongoing strategic evolution and tactical approach • Work collaboratively with BDC management and colleagues in other funds to share insights and information on all investment decisions Portfolio Strategy & Deal Making • In collaboration with the Managing Partner and the team, support the development and implementation portfolio strategies that drive portfolio companies to maximize value for all stakeholders in a time frame appropriate for the risk, reward and BDC Capital's objective to generate proceeds. Monitor and adjust strategies as needed. • Develop influence skills to develop and maintain alignment with management and the syndicate of each portfolio company. • Ensure portfolio companies are closely followed to ensure we are prepared to support them with additional capital and/or protect our investment where necessary. • Set the deal team priorities to review, validate and execute due diligence activities for each portfolio company. • Lead complex due diligence for existing investment opportunities by orchestrating analyses such as market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table, and anything that is relevant to determining potential business value and exit strategies. • Produce thorough and compelling Investment Memoranda, eliciting sound rationales behind investment options and influencing the internal Investment Committee. • Review, recommend and approve account updates, amendments, and capital calls. Portfolio Management & Exit Planning • Provide hands-on, value-add support (e.g., mentoring, capital introductions) to portfolio companies to support business building while developing multiple exit options. • Develop and maintain exit plans for each portfolio company. • Actively manage return expectations for each investment, aligning with prior BDC Capital fund mandates and return expectations where possible. • Represent BDC's interests as a board observer or director of existing portfolio companies, actively influencing and supporting the management of portfolio companies when appropriate. • Advise BDC Capital funds and their portfolio companies on exit planning and execution as required. • Lead the development of periodic updates on the fund's activity to senior management and the BDC Capital Divesture Committee. Networks & Reputation • Build and maintain wide and strong networks within the business and investment community, developing contacts for interim management positions, advisors and potential acquirers. • Build and leverage connections in the investment communities in Canada and globally, seeking high quality investment partners or possible secondary buyers. • Attend conferences and networking activities to act as an ambassador for the Asset Management Group, BDC Capital and BDC, where relevant. • Position BDC as a first-class fund manager, ensuring a positive experience for external LP's. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Typical Background • 10+ years of experience in a role involving structured thinking, financial analysis, and technical expertise. These profiles are likely to come from, but are not limited to: • Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment banking, accounting • Operator roles: technology startup, industry-leading corporation, industry specialist • Advisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development • Bachelor's degree in commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Other degrees are accepted if the professional has strong analytical skills • A post-graduate degree or equivalent certification is an asset. Typical postgraduate credentials are likely to be, but are not limited to: • Master's in business administration (MBA) • Other Finance Master's or PhD degree • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) • A successful track-record of investments in private equity, venture capital or indirect investing is an asset. Technical Knowledge • Expert understanding of the deal process, from sourcing to due diligence, to portfolio management • Ability to build a strong network in the Canadian and international investment ecosystems, sourcing deal prospects and partnership opportunities with other funds and investors • Solid understanding of financial statements and operational topics, easily translating them into insights about the business • Strong skills in Excel, particularly in building robust financial models that include sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling, as well as performing complex data analysis. Any other analytic tools and techniques are an asset • Good ability to use other MS-suite applications efficiently, mainly Word and PowerPoint • Good ability to solve problems using structured thinking and communication techniques • Ability to write and to coach a team at writing an Investment Memo that is clear, concise, and eloquent • Technology skills with wide applications, such as coding, chemistry or electronics can be an asset • Operational knowledge of any technical industry is an asset • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset, particularly in presenting results and information to an executive-level audience Behavioral Traits • Leadership to inspire and drive a team towards excellence and positive results • Well-intentioned and generous attitude to coach and mentor team members at progressing in their personal and professional development • Ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with stakeholders within and outside BDC, with a sensible approach to vertical and horizontal relationships • Interpersonal polish and strong business communication, effectively influencing executive and operational audiences • Continuous learning attitude, with maturity to give and take feedback constructively • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment, where objectives must be met within tight deadlines
