Additional Information:
A doctor of optometry diagnoses, manages and treats conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. The optometrist will be capable of examining the internal and external structures of the eyes, performing subjective and objective tests to evaluate vision, and evaluating physical findings in order to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Provides treatment in the form of prescribed corrective spectacle and contact lenses, low-vision aids, ocular patching regimens, motility exercises, and topical ocular medications. Works with other health professionals in managing the care of patients in order to provide optimal outcomes.

Description
1. Examines eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities.
2. Assesses patient's suitability for contact lenses as requested patient/family.
3. Prescribes, supplies, fits and adjusts eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.
4. Analyzes test results and formulates treatment plan to correct visual discrepancies to include referral to pediatric ophthalmology colleagues if necessary.
5. Prescribes medications to treat eye diseases.
6. Educates and counsels patients on contact lens care, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors.
7. Follows up with treatment plan by scheduling patient for follow up visit.
8. Follows up on telephone triage of patients with difficulty with treatment plan.
9. Participates in education and training of patients/families, medical staff and other health care providers.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
