Job ScopeThis is a hands-on instrumentation design and development position ideally suited for the hardware engineer who enjoys designing, building, testing and debugging complex state-of-the-art optical instruments, specifically conventional and imaging flow cytometry cell analysis systems. Lens design and optical engineering to drive development of optical and opto-mechanical systems and components related to existing and new product development. Creating documentation, i.e., requirements definition, specifications, test plans, ECO's etc., as required, supporting R&D, Manufacturing, Field Service, Customer Service, and other departments with respect to new product development and support to existing products. Creating optical models for design and engineering analysis using Zemax Optic Studio and other software tools.
What you will be doing:- Design and develop custom optical systems, including lens designs for illumination and imaging systems, laser beam propagation optics and optical filters for fluorescence detection as well as optical test fixtures for new and existing products
- Perform prototype system integration, testing and debugging; design laboratory experiments and suggest solutions to problems
- Interact with various internal and external groups during system development. Work closely with application scientists as well as mechanical, electrical and software engineers to create next generation flow cytometry products for both research and clinical applications
- Prepare reports and inform the project team(s) on a regular basis
- Provide technical support to Manufacturing and Field Service and contribute to continuous quality improvements
Education, Experience, and Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree in Optics, Optical Sciences or Optical Engineering required or Master's Degree with an emphasis is optical engineering preferred
- Experience with laser instrumentation. Direct experience in flow cytometry is a definite advantage preferred
- Sufficient technical education and experience to quickly become familiar with the architecture and operation of current production instruments along with instrument control and data analysis software to establish an in-depth understanding of the technology preferred
- Proficiency with Zemax Optics Studio optical design software with demonstrated experience in lens design and tolerancing. Non-sequential raytracing experience is a plus preferred
- Familiarity with solid modelling CAD software and drawing specification and tolerancing. Proficiency using SolidWorks is highly desired preferred
- Familiarity with laser beam characterization and measurement tools preferred
- Working knowledge of specifications for optical coatings and filters, including dichroic edge filters, laser notch filters, and bandpass filters typically used in fluorescence detection applications preferred
- A passion for hands on assembly, integration and testing of prototype instrument designs is essential. preferred
