Overview

VMG Health is seeking an Ophthalmology Director to join our Specialty Practice Management team. This role works directly with ophthalmology practices, eye care groups, retina and glaucoma practices, ambulatory surgery centers, and emerging specialty platforms to improve operational performance, financial outcomes, patient access, and growth strategy.

Our directors work with physician owners, executive leaders, and private equity backed platforms to evaluate practice performance and implement strategies that strengthen patient access, provider productivity, clinic throughput, surgical coordination, financial performance, and organizational alignment. This role is ideal for someone who has experience in the ophthalmology industry and enjoys combining operational insight, financial analysis, clinical workflow knowledge, and strategic advisory work.

Directors work on a variety of engagements and internal initiatives including operational assessments, financial analysis, growth strategy development, organizational structure and governance, provider productivity assessments, service line optimization, patient flow improvement, workforce planning, resource coordination, reporting tool development, and implementation support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborate with physician owners, executive teams, ASC leaders, practice leadership, and private equity backed organizations through engagements focused on:
• Growth planning for independent ophthalmology practices, integrated eye care groups, and multi-location platforms
• Strategic initiatives, day-to-day business operations, and practice management support for ophthalmology and ASC leadership teams
• Organizational structure and leadership development
• Clinic operations, patient flow, scheduling, referral intake, and performance improvement
• Operational workflows, staffing resources, and project coordination to support successful execution of client engagements and internal priorities
• Financial analysis of practice performance, revenue cycle trends, surgical contribution, and service line economics
• Workforce planning, onboarding, employee development, and organizational effectiveness initiatives in collaboration with corporate and practice leaders
• Cross-functional projects and special initiatives aligned with VMG Health strategic objectives

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate brings a combination of industry knowledge, analytical thinking, and consulting mindset.
• 5+ years of experience in ophthalmology, optometry, eye care, or specialty physician practice management
• Experience working with independently owned ophthalmology practices, integrated platforms, or growth stage organizations preferred
• Strong understanding of ophthalmology practice financial structure, clinic operations, surgical coordination, provider productivity, and subspecialty service lines
• Experience analyzing practice financial performance, provider productivity, schedules, and compensation plans, patient access, referral patterns, surgical volume, and operational metrics
• Ability to communicate effectively with physician owners and executive leaders
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
