Operational Technology Engineer
Brief description:
Design, implement, and maintain Distribution Management System (DMS), SCADA, Outage Management System (OMS), and related operational technology (OT) platforms that monitor and control the transmission and distribution (T&D) network for DP&L and IPL. These systems are critical to safe, reliable electric grid operations.
The role requires broad knowledge across hardware and software, T&D operations, networking, firewalls and cybersecurity, power system modeling, and remote field devices, spanning both modern and legacy technologies and supporting the AES Digital Strategy.
• Configure, install, operate, and maintain mission-critical OT systems to ensure reliable grid operations.
• Develop and maintain data models that support advanced ADMS power system applications.
• Configure and support advanced applications such as Distribution Power Flow (DPF), Fault Location, Isolation & Service Restoration (FLISR), and Volt/VAR Control (VVC).
• Integrate Geographic Information System (GIS) data by extracting, translating, and loading network models into the ADMS.
• Provide cross-functional support for multiple OT applications.
• Support 24x7 operations for systems used by T&D field, engineering, planning, reporting, and dispatch teams.
• Partner with users to apply technology that improves business processes, protects critical assets, and enhances customer service.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting to resolve issues efficiently.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders, vendors, and external partners to share information, advise on projects, resolve issues, set priorities, and deliver work within schedule and budget.
• Create and maintain diagrams and documentation for current-state and future-state OT configurations.
• Evaluate vendor products and services for applicability to OT hardware, software, networks, and related systems.
• Serve as a technical subject-matter expert for solution design, development, testing, and deployment of new capabilities and significant enhancements.
• Monitor applicable federal, state, and local requirements and support compliance so systems meet regulatory obligations.
• Contribute to the company technology roadmap and provide input to departmental budgeting.
• Participate in the OT support team's on-call rotation.
• May provide functional leadership to field technicians, as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Experience designing and implementing real-time T&D control systems.
• Strong technical understanding of hardware, software, and networking fundamentals.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
