Job DescriptionGENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking to hire an attorney for the Legal Strategy Division. This Assistant Attorney General will work directly for counsel in Legal Strategy, whose mission is to identify, plan, staff, and execute the Agency's most consequential legal initiatives. A candidate for Assistant Attorney General must have demonstrated commitment to the Agency's mission to champion liberty and justice and the Agency's philosophy of individual liberty, limited government, economic freedom, and personal responsibility. A candidate must have a keen interest in mustering the powers of the Office of the Attorney General to champion liberty and justice for Texas.
If hired, the Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the Agency's Office of the Solicitor General, Special Litigation Unit, General Litigation Division, the Communications Division, and other Deputies on the executive team. He or she will be expected to plan and carry out legal initiatives on his or her own. Job responsibilities will include work involving researching, writing, analyzing, drafting, and preparing of information for release and/or for use by the agency, the public, and other agencies. Directs, plans, organizes, and monitors legal activities; and interprets laws and regulations. The Assistant Attorney General will work with the Agency's top attorneys in the pursuit of the Agency's most significant matters.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS- Represents the state's interest in complex multidivisional matters involving a variety of legal areas by performing tasks that include: preparing legal documents; and conducting legal research.
- Provides legal advice, counsel, and assistance to the agency's Executive Administration on significant, multidivisional matters
- Oversees the analysis of factual and legal issues and develops matters through
interviews and other proceedings. - Advises clients and management on factual and legal issues
- With approval from Executive Administration and Agency Press Office, may represent the agency publicly at designated events (e.g., press conferences, meetings, public announcements) regarding significant, highprofile, and complex multidivisional matters
- Performs related work as assigned
- Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
- Attends work regularly in compliance with agreedupon work schedule
- Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
- Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree
- Licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas
- Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas and eligible to practice law in Texas by start date.
- Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings; and of state and federal laws, regulations, and rules
- Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis; in conducting investigations; in using reasoning and logic; in identifying and solving complex problems; in prioritizing workloads; in using judgment to identify courses of action; and in the use of a computer and applicable software
- Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
- Ability to prepare legal documents, to conduct research, to interpret and apply laws, to summarize findings, to communicate effectively, and to supervise the work of others
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to deadlines
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
- Ability to work inperson at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform inperson work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave). Remote work is allowed, as necessary and approved.
- Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
- Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
- Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 25%
