Applications are invited for two (2) positions for a 2-year contract of Nurse Practitioner (Primary, Clinical) in the Student Health, Division of Students, located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus AND Welland Campus. The salary range is $113,514-$141,892.
Reporting to the Director, Health Services, the Nurse Practitioner will deliver the full spectrum of primary care at Niagara College, including acute episodic care, chronic disease management, mental health care, ADHD assessment and management, sexual and reproductive health, and health promotion. This is a crucial role that will contribute to the ongoing development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of integrated student health services, working collaboratively with Health Services, Counselling Services, and campus partners to support coordinated, accessible care across the student health continuum. The role functions within an integrated, collaborative model of student health service delivery, practicing autonomously as a primary care provider while serving as a clinical resource, consultant, and mentor to Registered Nurses.
This is a key role in the organization that will provide clinical leadership through consultation, mentorship, interprofessional collaboration, and quality improvement activities while maintaining a primary direct-care focus.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Performs thorough health assessments including health history and physical examination using a holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive framework relevant to a student's stage of development and culture
- Considers the social determinants of health and addresses the biopsychosocial needs of students, including those with complex comorbid conditions, mental health diagnoses, and/or concurrent substance use disorders
- Independently diagnoses and manages a broad range of acute, episodic, and chronic conditions including: mental health disorders (anxiety, depression, mood disorders, emotional dysregulation); ADHD assessment and management using validated rating scales, diagnostic interviews, and pharmacological/non-pharmacological treatment; chronic conditions (Type 2 diabetes, thyroid disease, asthma, allergies, migraine/headache); and acute/episodic presentations (respiratory, dermatological, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal)
- Assesses clinical urgency, selects the appropriate level of care, facilitates timely referrals to other providers, and determines follow-up requirements
- Orders, interprets, and acts upon relevant screening and diagnostic investigations (laboratory, imaging, and other modalities) in a timely and professional manner
- Prescribes pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies within NP scope
- Provides STI screening, testing, treatment, and contact tracing; delivers contraception counselling, prescribing, and follow-up care
- Provides gender-affirming care, including assessment, monitoring, referral, and coordination of services within scope of practice
- Assesses and responds to mental health crises including suicide risk; develops safety plans and facilitates referrals to counselling, psychiatry, community supports, or emergency services as required
- Provides equitable and culturally competent care to all students, including Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+, and international students, with attention to diverse barriers to health access
- Delivers health promotion and illness prevention guidance tailored to student health status, social determinants of health, and life stage (Communicable disease surveillance/immunizations)
- Acts as a clinical mentor and day-to-day resource for Registered Nurses (RNs), supporting safe, evidence-informed nursing practice and professional development within CNO standards and established medical directives
Qualifications: - Master of Nursing (MN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) from an accredited Canadian university, with Nurse Practitioner specialization
- Completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner - Primary Health Care (NP-PHC) or Nurse Practitioner - Adult (NP-Adult) certificate program from an accredited institution
- Current registration and active licensure with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Nurse Practitioner (NP), in good standing
- Current membership with the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) or CNPS and maintenance of professional liability protection
- Minimum three (3) years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a primary care, community health, outpatient clinic, or ambulatory care setting
- Must be certified in Basic CPR and First Aid
- Valid G driver's license and access to reliable transportation required for inter-campus travel between Welland and DJP campuses
- Demonstrated experience with ADHD assessment and management, including validated rating scales, diagnostic interviews, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches
- Demonstrated experience managing mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and emotional dysregulation in a primary care or outpatient setting
- Experience providing STI screening, treatment, contraception counselling, and sexual and reproductive health care
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse, equity-deserving, and vulnerable populations including youth, Indigenous peoples, racialized communities, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and/or international students
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills; ability to engage with students in a non-judgmental, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive manner
