Job Requirements Position OverviewThis position is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus and provides care within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works a rotating schedule and collaborates closely with physicians and the multidisciplinary care team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to critically ill patients.
Under general supervision, the APP is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients in collaboration with physician colleagues. The APP promotes continuity of care by facilitating communication among the healthcare team, patients, and families while ensuring quality outcomes, patient safety, and efficient utilization of resources. The APP integrates current research and evidence-based practices into clinical decision-making.
Principal ResponsibilitiesClinical PracticeIn collaboration with the attending physician, the APP:
- Provides day-to-day clinical leadership and coordination of patient care.
- Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
- Orders, interprets, and acts upon diagnostic studies.
- Establishes diagnoses and develops individualized treatment plans.
- Prescribes medications and therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.
- Initiates and manages clinical pathways and evidence-based protocols.
- Performs invasive procedures appropriate to training and credentialing.
- Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and collaborates on admission, transfer, and discharge planning.
- Communicates plans of care with physicians, nurses, case managers, patients, and family members.
- Provides patient and family education regarding disease processes, medications, and treatment plans.
- Facilitates timely and appropriate referrals and specialty consultations.
- Promotes safe transitions of care and discharge planning.
- Advocates for patients and families and coordinates supportive services, including pain management and palliative care.
Education and Mentorship- Serves as a clinical resource for nurses, residents, fellows, students, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participates in mentoring and precepting activities.
- Provides formal and informal educational programs based on evidence-based practice.
- Supports community outreach and health promotion initiatives.
Clinical Leadership and Quality Improvement- Collaborates with physician leadership to achieve quality, safety, length of stay, patient satisfaction, and cost-of-care goals.
- Participates in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.
- Assists with the development and implementation of clinical pathways and standards of care.
- Supports accreditation readiness and regulatory compliance activities.
- Applies research and evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes.
- Participates in departmental, divisional, and organizational initiatives.
Professional Development and Research- Maintains professional licensure, certifications, and continuing education requirements.
- Participates in departmental educational activities, including grand rounds and journal clubs.
- Engages in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
- Supports research, evidence-based practice, and scholarly activities.
- Doctorally prepared APPs may participate as principal investigators and contribute to the advancement of nursing science.
QualificationsEducation- Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
Licensure and Certification- Current Maryland licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- National certification in specialty area.
- DEA and CDS eligibility.
- Current CPR certification.
- ACLS and BCLS certifications, as required for inpatient practice.
Experience- Minimum of one year of Registered Nurse experience required.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development through teaching, research, publication, certification, or participation in professional organizations.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Working Conditions- Rotating schedule, including weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call responsibilities.
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases; adherence to standard and transmission-based precautions is required.
- Ability to respond to the physical demands of an acute care environment.
Additional InformationCompensation Range: $54.00 - $77.00 per hour
