Summary

SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to provide direct outpatient patient care services as a nationally certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant at the Pine Ridge Indian Health Service (IHS) Hospital. The mission is to raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of the Oglala Lakota Nation to the highest level through comprehensive acute health care. This is a non-personal services role where the provider supports an outpatient same-day appointment clinic and ensures continuity of care in a rural setting.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clinical Care: Provide diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services, including the management of common acute illnesses, injuries, and chronic diseases.
  • Procedures & Specialized Care: Perform minor urgent care procedures (e.g., laceration repair, splinting) and provide women’s health services (e.g., pelvic/breast exams, Pap smears) as privileged.
  • Emergency Intervention: Provide emergency or crisis intervention to stabilize patients for transport and coordinate with EMS or higher-level facilities when necessary.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely Electronic Health Records (EHR) in compliance with IHS standards, including proper coding and "purpose-of-visit" diagnoses.
  • Coordination: Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and consult with physicians for complex cases, admissions, or high-risk presentations.
  • Patient Education: Counsel patients and families on risk reduction, diet, exercise, and medication adherence.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Clinical Expertise: High level of professional knowledge and ability in outpatient medicine.
  • Communication: Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing) with the ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated sensitivity and respect for the values, traditions, and beliefs of the Native American community.
  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to effectively utilize Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Certification: Must maintain current national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or in Adult/Family Medicine appropriate to the scope of services.
  • Work History: A complete curriculum vitae (CV) showing full work history is required, with explanations for any employment gaps of eight weeks or more.
  • CME: Must provide a record of recent continuing medical education (minimum 20 CME/CEU credits per year within the past three years).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory work required. May oversee tasks.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Setting: Duties are performed in a hospital and clinical environment, including outlying clinics and mobile units.
  • Hazards: Potential exposure to contagious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Weather: Pine Ridge experiences extreme cold and windy winters; providers must be prepared to travel and perform duties under adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Fitness: Must have no medical, physical, or mental restrictions that interfere with the full and safe performance of duties.
  • Professionalism: Must maintain a professional appearance and hygiene consistent with IHS dress code standards.

ROLE AND LOCATION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

Providers may be required to perform services at outlying PRSU outpatient clinics, school-based clinics, correctional/juvenile detention facilities, and designated outreach venues such as community events or mobile units.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • Standard Clinic: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • Sunday/Holiday Clinic: 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM when scheduled.
  • Extended Hours: Providers may be required to remain after hours to ensure patient safety or complete critical EHR documentation.
  • Breaks: Includes a mandatory 60-minute unpaid meal break during full clinic days.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Providers must maintain reliable transportation and be prepared to travel to various PRSU facilities and outlying clinics within the Pine Ridge Reservation as scheduled.

 

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENT

  • License: Active, current, and unrestricted NP or PA-C license from any of the 50 U.S. states, D.C., or Puerto Rico.
  • Security Clearance: Must successfully complete a Federal background investigation to obtain a Tier 2 Security Clearance and a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card.
  • DEA: Active DEA license with Schedule II and IIN prescribing authority.
  • Certifications: Current BLS and ACLS (and NRP if required) valid for the entire period of performance.
  • Health: Proof of required immunizations (MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Hepatitis A/B, Influenza, COVID-19, etc.) and tuberculosis testing.
