Position Summary

The Gastroenterology & Hepatology Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive medical care to patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases in collaboration with gastroenterologists and hepatologists. This role includes outpatient clinic care, diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, patient education, and care coordination. Depending on clinical need and interest, this position will have a primary focus on Hepatology or General Gastroenterology.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with gastrointestinal and liver conditions, including but not limited to:
    • GERD, IBD, IBS, celiac disease
    • Cirrhosis, hepatitis (viral, autoimmune, metabolic), NAFLD/MASLD
    • GI bleeding, pancreatitis, motility disorders
  • Perform patient histories, physical exams, and ongoing follow-up visits
  • Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, pathology)
  • Develop and implement treatment plans under supervising physician guidance.
  • Manage chronic disease care and medication adjustments

Inpatient & Outpatient Duties
  • Assist with hospital admissions, discharges, and care transitions
  • Provide outpatient clinic coverage and follow-up care
  • Coordinate referrals to surgery, transplant, oncology, nutrition, or other specialties

Procedures & Technical Skills
  • Perform office-based procedures as credentialed (paracentesis, rectal exams, etc.)
  • Educate patients on procedures, preparation, and post-procedure care

Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, billing requirements, and quality standards
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives

Patient Education & Collaboration
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, dietitians, transplant teams, and other healthcare professionals
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences when applicable

Qualifications

Required
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Active New York State NP license
  • DEA license (or eligibility)
  • BLS certification (ACLS preferred depending on setting)

Preferred
  • Prior experience in gastroenterology, hepatology, internal medicine, or hospital medicine
  • Strong clinical reasoning, communication, and organizational skills

Schedule & Work Environment
  • Full-time or part-time; outpatient, inpatient, or mixed model
  • Possible call, weekend, or holiday coverage depending on practice needs
