Job Summary

We are seeking a full- or part-time Project Manager for the UM-led NSF National Quantum Virtual Laboratory on Quantum Photonic Integration and Deployment (QuPID). During QuPID's two-year Phase-2 design stage, the Project Manager will lead the management framework for developing chip-based quantum sensor technology that is portable, robust, and deployable outside the highly controlled laser-laboratory environments typically required for today's quantum sensors. The Project Manager will work with the PI and research leads to develop the Project Execution Plan, Education and Workforce Development plan (E&WDP) and management/systems-engineering framework. Monitoring may need a Gantt Chart to be produced for visual monitoring.

The Project Manager will lead the operational and project-management framework for QuPID's two-year NSF Phase-2 design effort. This includes developing and maintaining the project execution plan, milestones, timelines, deliverables, risk-management processes, meeting structures, reporting workflows, and project-management tools. The Project Manager will coordinate across research thrusts, participating institutions, administrative units, workforce-development and outreach activities, and external partners to ensure that the project advances in an organized and accountable manner.

The role will also support NSF reporting, proposal preparation, review documentation, stakeholder communication, and planning for a potential five-year Phase-3 implementation effort of up to $50M each year. The Project Manager will work closely with the PI and research leads to build the systems-engineering and management structure needed for a major quantum-research enterprise, while the PI and scientific team retain responsibility for scientific direction.

Responsibilities*
  • Project management, especially systems engineering and project execution planning
  • Development and use of project-management tools and protocols
  • Coordination of multi-institutional and multi-stakeholder projects
  • Proposal preparation and federal research-program reporting
  • Coordination and reporting for workforce development, outreach, and partnerships
  • Ensure all reporting and milestones are delivered on time
  • Work with Research Administrators on compliance, and budget requirements for the project
  • Develop and foster close working relationships with inter- and cross-collaborative units and project collaborators, within/outside of the University
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, business management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to both work independently and as an effective team member
