Position Description:Our people division is growing, and we are looking for a Safety Superintendent to join our Capital Projects team. The successful candidate will provide hands-on, field-based safety leadership at assigned project sites. The role implements the project safety management system at the site level, supports and coaches supervisors and contractors in safe execution of work, and verifies that critical controls are in place and effective. The Safety Superintendent is a visible safety presence in the field and a key driver of the site safety culture.
Responsibilities:- Provide daily field safety leadership and maintain a strong, visible presence across work fronts.
- Implement and enforce the project safety management system, site safety plans, and MSHA regulatory requirements at the assigned site.
- Support and coach frontline supervisors and contractor teams in hazard identification, job hazard analysis, and safe work planning.
- Verify critical controls for high-risk activities (e.g., lifting operations, work at height, confined space, energy isolation, ground disturbance, mobile equipment interactions).
- Conduct field inspections, audits, and observations; track corrective actions to closure.
- Lead and support incident reporting and investigations; assist with root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
- Deliver site safety inductions, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
- Monitor contractor safety performance and participate in contractor safety meetings and reviews.
- Support emergency preparedness, including drills, first response coordination, and liaison with emergency services.
- Maintain accurate safety records, statistics, and reporting for the assigned site.
- Promote worker engagement in safety through field conversations, recognition, and feedback programs.
- Site-based role at NGM project sites in the Elko region. Work is predominantly field-based in active construction and mining environments, in all weather conditions, and may involve rotating schedules, extended hours, and on-call requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or equivalent experience; relevant safety certifications (e.g., CMSP, CHST, OHST) preferred
- Minimum 7 years of safety experience in mining or heavy construction environments, including supervisory or superintendent-level experience preferred
- Strong working knowledge of MSHA regulations; MSHA instructor certification preferred
- Experience in multi-contractor construction project environments preferred
- Current first aid/CPR certification; emergency response experience an advantage required
- Strong field presence with the ability to engage and influence frontline crews required
- Practical, solutions-oriented approach to managing safety in dynamic work environments preferred
- Effective coaching, communication, and conflict resolution skills required
- Competent in incident investigation techniques and safety data management required
- Ability to work autonomously and prioritize across multiple active work fronts required
