Provides direct supervisory oversight for the daily operations and performance of assigned language services department team members. Mentors staff to ensure the efficient, professional, and consistent delivery of services, while spearheading policy improvements that prioritize patient safety, promote inclusivity, and maintain regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Network Language Services Supervisor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Directs daily department operations by optimizing staffing models, streamlining workflows, and conducting regular productivity assessments to ensure operational excellence
- Manages the administrative, educational, and instructional operations of the network's medical interpreter program.
- Provides supervision, mentoring, and professional development to all assigned members of the language services team.
- Creates a team focused environment to ensure quality patient care. Conducts team meetings to drive excellence in customer service and collaborative teamwork
- Participates in performance evaluations. Makes recommendations on hires, transfers, promotions, disciplines, terminations and similar actions.
- Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives.
- Assists in developing procedures that comply with established organizational policies, quality, safety, and other programs.
- Deploys, maintains VRI (video remote interpreting) devices in all inpatient and outpatient areas.
- Drives performance improvement initiatives. Recommends improvements in systems, schedules, policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and serves as a liaison to language related third party companies and vendors.
- Partners with the broader leadership team to proactively identify and resolve complex operational issues.
- Monitors monthly costs, cost allocation, resource usage, and language trends across the system per facility.
- Proactively trains team members on how to work with interpreters and troubleshoots throughout the network any issues that arise regarding the use of interpreters.
- Researches, develops and implements innovative and effective methods for provision of language and cultural services.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Associate's Degree or above in related field.
- Bi-lingual
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in either hospital/healthcare, business, hospitality, or customer service-related.
- Minimum of 3 years prior supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated leadership ability including independent decision-making, self-direction, initiative, judgment and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree
- Hospital operations experience
- Completion of a 40-hour medical interpreting program.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Certified qualified and trained interpreter from entity such as Bridging The Gap (BTG), ALTA, etc
