Job Description:Position SummaryThe Network Infrastructure Engineer supports the planning, design, implementation, activation, and quality assurance of telecommunications infrastructure systems throughout Arizona State University. Under general direction, this position provides technical expertise for structured cabling systems, fiber optic infrastructure, pathways and spaces, telecommunications rooms, and supporting low-voltage infrastructure associated with university construction and renovation projects.
The position works closely with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, facilities personnel, campus stakeholders, and technology teams to ensure compliance with ASU standards, industry best practices, and project objectives.
In addition to planning, design review, and quality assurance activities, the Network Infrastructure Engineer coordinates the deployment, commissioning, and activation of technology infrastructure supporting university facilities. Responsibilities include coordinating rack-and-stack activities, activation of network electronics, wireless infrastructure, telecommunications services, horizontal cabling assignments, and supporting project turnover and transition to operations.
This is not a traditional network operations position. The primary focus is telecommunications infrastructure planning, design review, construction support, quality assurance, commissioning, and activation of communications infrastructure supporting university facilities.
Position Salary Range: $80,000 - $112,200; depends on experience
Essential Duties:Provide technical expertise for the design and implementation of structured cabling systems, including Category 6A, fiber optic, and specialty communications infrastructure.
- Review architectural, electrical, telecommunications, and low-voltage construction documents for compliance with ASU standards and industry best practices.
- Support programming, schematic design, design development, and construction phases of capital improvement and tenant improvement projects.
- Participate in project meetings with architects, engineers, contractors, facilities personnel, and university stakeholders.
- Perform field assessments, site surveys, and telecommunications infrastructure evaluations.
- Review submittals, shop drawings, requests for information (RFIs), product data, and proposed design modifications.
- Conduct construction quality assurance and quality control inspections.
- Verify installation compliance with ASU Division 27 standards, project specifications, and applicable industry standards.
- Assist with campus fiber optic infrastructure planning and expansion initiatives.
- Maintain technical documentation, standards, design details, and infrastructure records.
- Collaborate with Enterprise Technology teams to align infrastructure solutions with operational requirements.
- Support modernization, renovation, and bond-funded infrastructure upgrade projects.
- Support commissioning, activation, turnover, and operational acceptance of telecommunications and network infrastructure systems associated with construction and renovation projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Leverage AI in routine tasks and contribute ideas for using AI to improve the unit's efficiency and overall performance.

- Collaborate across teams and actively participate in ET/ASU events and programs.
Desired Qualifications:Demonstrated experience with:
- Structured cabling system design, implementation, testing, certification, and lifecycle management.
- Fiber optic infrastructure, including both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) environments.
- Telecommunications room (TR), entrance facility (EF), equipment room (ER), and pathway design.
- New construction, renovation, modernization, and tenant improvement projects.
- Construction administration, project coordination, contractor management, and owner representation.
- Reading, interpreting, and reviewing architectural, engineering, telecommunications, and construction documents.
- Quality assurance and quality control inspections of communications infrastructure installations.
- Higher education, healthcare, government, research, municipal, or large-scale enterprise environments.
- Managing multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities.
- Communicating technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to model empathy, compassion, and emotional intelligence.

- BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD)
- BICSI Outside Plant Designer (OSP)
- BICSI Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM)
- BICSI Data Center Design Consultant (DCDC)
- BICSI Technician (TECH) Certification
- BICSI Installer Certifications
- Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certifications
- Manufacturer certifications related to fiber optic, structured cabling, or telecommunications infrastructure

Working Environment:- Regular walking of active construction sites and existing campus facilities.
- Ability to travel between ASU campuses and project locations throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, dust, and construction environments.
- Ability to inspect telecommunications rooms, pathways, manholes, vaults, handholes, and other infrastructure spaces.
- Ability to climb ladders and access construction areas when necessary.
- Ability to lift and move telecommunications equipment and materials within applicable safety guidelines.
