- Provide inpatient pediatric care including:
- Rounding on pediatric inpatients on the hospital floor
- Seeing and admitting pediatric patients from the Emergency Department
- Admitting infusion patients
- Rounding on well newborn infants in the nursery

The Staff Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a Physician Assistant and a member of the care delivery team. The Staff APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Staff APP has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Staff APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. Provides primary health care and emergency services to high-risk newborns and infants. Obtains history, performs physical exams, interprets lab, radiographic, and clinical data to assist in developing a plan of care for each infant under physician supervision. Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with protocols and policies as consistent with the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners. Collaborates with nursing and allied health staff to help in providing family teaching and coordinating discharge planning. The Staff APP begins to demonstrate a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession.
Responsibilities: Elicit, record, and interpret a complete health history, including past medical, obstetrical, family and psychosocial aspects. Perform comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, order and interpret laboratory, radiographic and clinical data in planning and documenting the course of management and discusses the plan with Neonatology Faculty, Fellows and consultants.
Participates in determining conditions, resources and policies basic to the delivery of high-quality health care of the high risk newborn.
Elicits, records, and interprets a complete health history, including past medical, obstetrical, family and psychosocial aspects.
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures necessary for the care of the patient. Such procedures are carried out in accordance with established protocols and after verifying patient name and birthdate. Make appropriate referrals in consultation with the attending physician for medical consultations, supportive services and regulatory reporting of patient safety issues.
Performs comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, appropriately orders and accurately interprets laboratory, radiographic and clinical data and communicates significant findings to the health care team (nursing, fellows, faculty and consultant).
Record and dictate interim, discharge, and transfer summaries. Provide support as well as information regarding the infant's condition, progress, and plan for care to parents/family, referring and consulting physician.
Discusses and coordinates the plan of care and procedures with the patient's primary nurse, Neonatology Faculty, Fellows and consultants.
Initiate emergency evaluation and treatment. Coordinate plan of care and procedure with the patient's primary nurse.
Performs comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, appropriately orders and accurately interprets laboratory, radiographic and clinical data and communicates significant findings to the health care team (nursing, fellows, faculty and consultant).
Regularly perform high level invasive procedures such as umbilical line placement and biopsies. Participate in determining conditions, resources, and policies basic to sound health care of the high-risk newborn.
Maintain clinical competency and keep informed of current trends and developments in neonatal nursing and related medical progress through continuing education and review of the literature.
Participate in the planning and presentation of continuing education programs for in-house medical and nursing personnel, referral hospital personnel and future RN's and Neonatal CRNP's.
Contributes to the body of medical and nursing knowledge through collaborative and independent research and publication.
Serve as a resource outside the hospital system in areas where his/her expertise can provide a community service. Serve as a member of Nursing and Medical committees as indicated.

Accurately and comprehensively documents the plan of care and course of management through the interim, discharge, and transfer summaries.

Regularly performs high level, invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as umbilical line placement, intubation, lumbar puncture, chest tube placement and PICC line insertions as are necessary for the care of the patient. Such procedures are carried out in accordance with established policies, regulatory guidelines and patient safety protocols.
Makes appropriate referrals in consultation with the attending physician for medical consultations, supportive services and regulatory reporting of patient safety issues.
Provides support as well as information regarding the infant's condition, progress, and plans for care to parents/family, referring and consulting physicians.
Facilitates and/or participates in internal and /or external neonatal transports.
Demonstrates knowledge of adult teaching principles (and/or teaching of children as applicable) and applies these when teaching patients, families, students and new staff.

Qualifications:Qualifications: The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures. Special Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Good clinical judgment. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice. This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.
Graduate of a Physician Asst. (ARC-PA)
Current Pennsylvania Physician Assistant license
Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Certified by the National Commission on NRP or STABLE required
BS required, MS or DPAS preferred
1 year level III or IV NICU PA experience or completion of a 9 month post-graduate residency/fellowship in neonatology required.
NCCPA certification.
Eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathy
BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
NRP certification listed must meet AAAP standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
ECMO competence required within 1 year of hire (Required at CHP)
Must maintain credentialing and licensure as an advanced practice provider.
