Summary of Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for the Leadership, Direction and Coaching of the Mortgage Underwriting and Processing teams through management and direct oversight of Mortgage Fulfillment activities. This role will provide support and approval for team members on standard underwriting, processing, special projects and may conduct research, analysis, and underwriting for unique or complex applications to ensure on time closing of Mortgage loans. The Underwriting Manager will be a team leader, directing the activities of associate-level and junior-level underwriters while supporting risk management and financial due diligence. This position requires an excellent balance of team leadership, administrative, and financial analysis skills to independently conduct risk assessments and underwriting.

Education:(1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree.

Experience:Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.

Knowledge and Skills:Ability to manage, inspire, and assist associate-level and junior-level personnel with experience conducting financial oversight activities, analyzing financial projections, and assessing risk for complex loan applications. Must be Subject Matter Expert in Fannie Mae, Jumbo, Home Equity and Non-QM underwriting requirements, including multi-state lending and AUS buildout. Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey information to their teams and to upper management regarding complex situations and risk analysis. Ability to examine and assess internal processes, identifying areas where practices can be improved and enhanced to maximize efficiency.   • Participate as a key leader within the Mortgage Leadership team.
  • Manage a team of Underwriters and Processors, ensuring loans are dispositioned timely and accurately while maintaining SLAs through pipeline management, file assignment and setting priorities.
  • Create self-reliant employees by owning all areas of employee management to include hiring, training, coaching, performance management and employee engagement.
  • Direct all aspects of the Underwriting and Processing consistent with TruWest Credit Union's risk tolerance with an emphasis on quality.
  • Create and support an amazing member experience through leadership of the Underwriting and Processing functions related to Mortgage Lending.
  • Stay current on guideline changes, industry regulation changes, investor updates and system enhancements to ensure the Underwriting team is informed, productive and compliant.
  • Drive continuous process improvement for all key performance areas within the Underwriting Team and Mortgage Team as a whole.
  • Collaborate with VP to complete monthly scorecards for Underwriters and Processors, performance evaluations, and recommend content for training and development of team members.
  • Manage quality trending on all Conforming, Conventional, Jumbo & Super Jumbo loans to meet GSE, Appendix Q & TruWest Credit Union guidelines.
  • Manage reporting and identify risk related to QC, QA, Loan Delivery, Post Closing, Credit Risk and/or Compliance. Communicates all trends to the responsible parties and Mortgage Team.
  • Actively participate with the Credit Risk Committee on changes related to product & underwriting guidelines. Update the Mortgage Origination Manuals related to Underwriting.
  • Provide guidance on escalated underwriting loan scenarios and escalated member inquiries related to Fulfillment. Works closely with Secondary Marketing to ensure all saleable loans meet requirements.
  • Effectively lead, collaborate, and communicate with employees, leaders, members, business partners, and other stakeholders to support business operations and achieve departmental objectives. This includes participating in designated onsite workdays and providing in-person leadership through real-time collaboration, coaching, mentoring, decision-making, employee support, spontaneous problem-solving, meetings, training, and cross-functional interactions. Leaders are expected to be available to provide timely direction, address operational and employee needs as they arise, and support the development and performance of their teams. These essential functions require physical presence in the workplace and cannot be effectively performed through virtual communication platforms alone.
