The Role
Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
Manages team of Engineering Designers that designs components or portions of Machinery and Propulsion systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and NAVISWORKS. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.
Must Have
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
(Combination of education and experience in lieu of degree: High school diploma and 14 years or Associate's Degree and 10 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design or equivalent)

Position will lead the entire Detail Design organization for multiple programs so the applicant should have:
1. Fluent understanding of the Ship Specifications in all areas of Detail Design
2. Superior communication skills including past experience with interfacing with Operations and the Navy
3. Leadership experience with small to large projects within Detail Design
4. Formal Leadership training is preferred
5. A good understanding of EVMS
6. Experience in creating a Plan including estimating, budget allocation, process development and Schedule creation
