POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

The Metrology Engineer in a Navy calibration lab plays a critical role in the METCAL Program, ensuring the accuracy, traceability, and reliability of test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) through calibration procedures aligned with NIST and DoD standards to support fleet readiness and naval operations. This position involves science of metrology, calibration of TMDE, performing measurement uncertainty analyses and measurement traceability, and troubleshooting equipment to maintain compliance in a DoD Navy calibration laboratory.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
• Work independently or with minimal supervision on complex projects, including reviewing TMDE specifications, performing uncertainty analysis and measurement traceability, and calculating test accuracy ratios.
• Develop, calibrate, and maintain measurement instruments and systems to ensure compliance with Navy, national and international standards.
• Guide Inter-Laboratory Comparison program IAW Navy METCAL policy and guidance. Design and implement metrology platforms, including test procedures, data analysis, and quality control guidelines for product specifications.
• Recommend new Calibration/Measurement processes and procedures; Conduct reviews, validations, and documentation of metrology procedures; Maintain Statistical Process Control for laboratory supported measurement areas.
• Analyze measurement data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement; certify equipment and processes for accuracy Generate Calibration Measurement Reports (CMRs) to document technical requirements and analysis.
• Provide support with the development and implementation of calibration procedures in accordance with Navy METCAL policy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Education - A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physical science.
• Technical Experience: Two (2) years of work-related experience demonstrating a technical understanding of the work. (A GPA of 3.0 or higher may be substituted for one year of experience.)

Preferred Qualifications or Skills

Technical experience includes:
• Knowledge of the Navy Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program and ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation.
• Preparing a variety of metrology directives, including Instrument Calibration Procedures (ICP), Metrology.
• Drafting Engineering Reports, Quality Manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Conducting engineering investigations/evaluations, calculations, and preparing final designs of measurement systems.
• Communicating and coordinating with local personnel, commercial calibration labs, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to maintain and improve calibration lab capabilities.
• Providing metrology technical advice, engineering services and calibration support.
• Developing computer programs to automate calibration calculations and measurements.
• Documenting computer hardware and software configurations in accordance with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005.
• Documenting uncertainty budgets to properly account for calibration and testing error sources.
