Job Summary

Responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating the duties of the meter electricians, field meter servicer, and distribution operations technicians in the safe installation/removal, operation, and maintenance of meters and metering equipment on distribution, transmission, and station facilities. Duties include the acquisition of meters and maintenance of appropriate meter stock inventories, installation and proper operation of distribution control equipment, testing of meters according to AEP standards and standards of state regulatory groups, reading of meters pertaining to large power customers and statistical load research, implementation of security sealing procedures, providing meter training programs for assigned personnel and others performing work on customer meter installations, and maintenance of meter records for the region.

What you'll do:

Essential Job Functions:
  • Assign, schedule, supervise, and coordinate meter activities of field personnel in the region for the safe construction, operation, and maintenance of assigned facilities; work with meter electricians, field meter servicer, field network technicians and/or distribution operations technicians, if applicable, in performance of assigned duties, providing assistance as required.
  • Perform field engineering and planning for the installation; proper operation; testing; and maintenance of meters, metering equipment, and instrument transformers throughout the region for residential, commercial, and industrial customers, working with customers, contractors, architects, and Company personnel, as required; coordinate region meter activities with engineering and line sections.
  • Oversee the meter testing program, including testing of meters in conformance with AEP standards and the standards of state regulatory groups, testing of newly installed metering equipment, testing meters for resolution of customer complaints and inquiries, and special testing of new metering equipment.
  • Coordinate planning for the installation and proper operation, inspection, and maintenance of distribution control equipment within the region, ensuring that installations meet applicable standards and codes.
  • Field check jobs to determine readiness of jobs requiring measurement employee involvement.
  • Conduct training programs necessary to ensure proper metering equipment installation/removal, testing, and maintenance procedures and techniques are being followed; provide training for customer services and line personnel performing work on customer meter installations, as required.
  • Supervise the acquisition and maintenance of meter inventories in the region in a manner to keep inventories to a minimum, including procurement of proper material, tools, and equipment as required for the installation of measurement facilities and distribution controls.
  • Oversee the preparation of records, studies, and reports pertaining to meter operations, utilizing the available work management systems to maximize the effectiveness of meter activities.
  • Assign, schedule and coordinate, and supervise the duties of field personnel in the safe reading; inspection; investigation; and connection and disconnection of meters, metering equipment, and AMI network equipment.
  • May oversee the revenue protection program coordination, including revenue protection coordinators and coordination of detection activities associated with unbilled revenue, including theft of service.
  • May assign, schedule, coordinate and supervise field network technicians in safe installation, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance and overall health of the AMI communication network and equipment.


What we're looking for:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in electrical/electronic technology or equivalent technical degree preferred with a minimum of six (6) years' experience in measurements or engineering,
  • or related experience, including demonstrated supervisory skills;
  • OR High School diploma/GED with eight (8) years experience in measurements or engineering, or related experience, including demonstrated supervisory skills.


Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:
  • Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record


Additional requirements:
  • Good working knowledge of procedures, practices, standards, codes and theory related to assigned facilities.
  • Manage collection order process in order to minimize customer account delinquencies.
  • Some travel, overnight if necessary.
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to supervisor employees and coordinate their work within all company policies and procedures.
