The Role:

The Merchant of Record (MoR) Accountant will provide end-to-end ownership of Cart.com's Merchant of Record accounting operations. This role is responsible for the integrity and accuracy of payment processing, settlements, tax compliance, financial reconciliations, and operational controls across MoR brands.

The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and combines strong accounting fundamentals with payments operations expertise. This individual will serve as the primary accounting and operational owner of the MoR process, helping scale the business while maintaining robust financial controls and compliance standards.

What You'll Do:
Merchant of Record Operations & Financial Oversight
  • Own the accounting and operational oversight of Merchant of Record activities across supported brands.
  • Review, validate, and approve high-value transactions and settlements in accordance with established approval thresholds and internal controls.
  • Monitor and resolve urgent payment exceptions, including settlement failures, payment holds, chargebacks, and significant refunds.
  • Maintain rigorous transaction-level review processes to minimize errors, prevent revenue leakage, and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for payment processing, settlements, reconciliations, tax compliance, and financial reporting related to MoR operations.
Reconciliations & Financial Controls
  • Perform and oversee reconciliations between payment platforms, banking activity, operational systems, and the general ledger.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner, with clear documentation of root cause and resolution.
  • Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Continuously improve control processes and identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiency.
Tax & Compliance
  • Ensure accurate sales tax collection, remittance, and reporting across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Manage tax configurations and coordinate with internal and external partners to maintain compliance.
  • Support audits and regulatory inquiries related to payment operations and Merchant of Record activities.
Process Improvement & Documentation
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance accounting policies, operational procedures, and internal controls.
  • Partner with payment providers and external vendors to support contractual compliance and operational effectiveness.
  • Implement and maintain statements of work, contracts, and operating requirements with payment vendors.
  • Create and maintain playbooks, standard operating procedures, and process documentation to support scalability and knowledge transfer.

What You've Done:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three to seven years of experience in payments operations, merchant services, accounting, finance, or a related field within e-commerce, SaaS, digital goods, marketplace, or technology-enabled services.
  • Strong understanding of payment processing, settlements, merchant accounts, and financial controls.
  • Hands-on experience preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close support.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience analyzing large datasets.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and reporting or analytics tools.


Nice to Haves:
  • Prior experience supporting or operating a Merchant of Record model or managing MoR vendors and platforms.
  • Experience with payment platforms such as Stripe, Braintree, PayPal, or similar providers.
  • Familiarity with tax automation solutions such as Avalara, TaxJar, or comparable systems.
  • Experience with ERP platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, or similar applications.
  • Experience developing scalable procedures, automation, and controls within a high-growth/fast paced environment.
