Position Highlights

University Facility Services is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Medium Voltage Supervisor to oversee the operation, maintenance, and reliability of the campus electrical distribution system. In this role, you will lead a team of skilled technicians responsible for inspecting, repairing, and upgrading medium- and high-voltage equipment across campus substations and distribution networks. The supervisor will also take part in prioritizing and establishing future projects.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervise and schedule shop staff performing maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of building systems, equipment, and utilities, including substations, transformers, PMS switches, circuit breakers, relays and battery systems.
  • Oversee installation, testing, and troubleshooting of equipment and building systems including protective relays, and communication systems to ensure reliable operation of the electrical distribution system.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, university policies, and regulatory requirements when performing maintenance and repair of building systems.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate skilled trades staff, promoting professional development and a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reporting related to shop activities, inspections, and reliability programs.
  • Coordinate campus-wide outages, upgrades, and emergency response with Facilities Management, Engineering, and external contractors.
  • Train new employees on procedures, safety, and use of test equipment.
  • Keep staff updated on latest technologies, standards, and tools in medium voltage systems.
  • Identify skills gaps and recommend training programs.
  • Communicate with clients or project managers regarding work status, findings, and recommendations.
  • Provide technical support for bids, estimates, or proposals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of substation design and infrastructure, distribution power and an understanding of the equipment within the system.
  • Ability to write and speak to project specific knowledge, estimating, plan review, excel, Smartsheet, electrical theory.
  • Ability to walk jobsites, including tunnels, substations, gear houses, and electrical rooms.
  • Ability to read,interpret, and draw electrical schematics (one-line and three-line diagrams).
  • Knowledge of medium-voltagedistribution system layouts, substation capacities, sectionalizing practices,and system reliability principles.
  • Strong leadership, communication,and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiplepriorities, respond to on-call needs, and work in all weather conditions.
  • Understanding of the University ofArizona electrical system, mainly 46kV and 13.8kV.
  • Knowledge of controls in mediumvoltage substation, understand of one-line and three-line diagrams.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Three years of progressive experience in substation, distribution, or medium-voltage electrical systems, including supervisory or lead responsibilities.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a formal Journeyman Apprenticeship Program.
  • Five years of electrical construction in a lead capacity.
  • Five years of distribution power experience.
  • Five years University distribution experience.
  • Five years of plan review or blueprint reading.
  • Ten years electrical/medium voltage experience.
  • OSHA, NFPA 70E Certification.
