What you'll doMedium voltage switchgear sits at the heart of every data center and customer program we run - it's the interface between generation, distribution, and load, and it has zero tolerance for design error. As
Medium Voltage Engineering Manager, you'll own the electrical engineering strategy for MV switchgear across Giga's data center and manufacturing portfolio: leading design reviews, setting protection and coordination standards, and managing a team of engineers through everything from single-line diagrams to factory acceptance testing. You'll be the technical authority who makes sure our MV systems are safe, code-compliant, and built to run at the pace this business demands.
Where you'll workWe are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our
San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.
That said,
we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities- Lead the electrical engineering design and specification of medium voltage switchgear (5kV-38kV), including bus configuration, breaker selection, and enclosure design
- Own protection and relay coordination studies, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazard assessments for MV systems
- Review and approve single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and switchgear schematics for accuracy and code compliance (NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NETA)
- Manage relationships with switchgear OEMs and manufacturers, including specification development, technical bid evaluation, and factory acceptance testing (FAT)
- Partner with construction and commissioning teams to ensure MV switchgear designs translate cleanly into field installation and startup
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of MV engineers, setting technical standards and reviewing their design work
- Serve as the internal escalation point for MV switchgear issues during procurement, construction, and operations
- Drive continuous improvement of MV design standards and templates across projects to increase speed and consistency
Requirements- 8+ years of electrical engineering experience with a focus on medium voltage power distribution systems
- 3+ years of experience directly managing or leading a team of engineers
- Deep hands-on experience with medium voltage switchgear design, specification, and testing
- Strong working knowledge of protective relay coordination, short circuit studies, and arc flash analysis
- Proficiency with industry-standard tools for power system studies (e.g., SKM, ETAP, or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards: NEC, IEEE, ANSI/NEMA, NETA
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- Experience reviewing OEM switchgear submittals and managing factory acceptance testing
Bonus points- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience with medium voltage systems in data center, utility, or hyperscale infrastructure environments
- Background in transformer manufacturing or transformer/switchgear integration
- Experience with arc-resistant switchgear design
- Familiarity with SCADA/protection relay programming (e.g., SEL, GE Multilin)
How We WorkWe value people who take ownership, raise risks early, communicate directly, and follow through. Incomplete information is part of the job. Make the best decision you can, document it, and adjust as the facts change. Move quickly on reversible decisions and take more care when security, safety, financial, employee, or customer risk is involved.
Benefits- Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
- Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
- 401(k) with 4% employer match
- Unlimited PTO
- Parental leave
- Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Commuter benefits, where applicable
- Opportunities to collaborate in person at periodic team and company on-sites
