Full Job Description
Position Summary:

The Medical Epidemiologist will work with the Chief Epidemiologist to plan, manage, and implement data analytic activities across a variety of population health datasets. Candidates should be detail-oriented and have excellent analytical, communication, writing, and organizational skills. The employee in this position will be responsible for all aspects related to data analysis and research, including data collection, cleaning, management, and presentation; developing research questions; performing statistical analysis; reporting and summarizing findings in clear and concise written and oral reports; and collaborating with other team members and partners on research activities. The Medical Epidemiologist will use appropriate data sources to monitor trends, patterns, and changes in risk factors and health outcomes, as well as use their medical background to interpret data from health records. The Medical Epidemiologist should be interested in topics such as the social determinants of health, population health, health policy, and advancing health equity through policy

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage, clean, analyze, and interpret data, including but not limited to administrative data, clinical data, survey data, hospitalization data, and internal research and evaluation project data.
• Perform all aspects of the research process, including literature reviews, designing research questions, constructing research instruments, data collection, data entry and preparation, statistical analysis, and other reporting of research findings.
• Communicate research and analysis findings to a variety of audiences.
-Handle data requests on an ongoing basis by conducting background research and analysis to support new research questions, policy positions, and interventions.
• Collaborate with departmental leadership, program staff, data staff, and communications staff, as well as external academic, medical, and policy partners.
• Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the healthcare and medical communities.
• Assist with facilitating qualitative data collection and analysis activities, such as conducting study participant interviews and focus groups, and translating and coding qualitative data.
• Assist with interpreting hospitalization, ambulatory, cancer registry, and other clinical and population health datasets.
• Interpret and analyze ICD-10 and other medical coding systems within large health datasets to support population health surveillance, epidemiologic analysis, and public health reporting.
• Participate in relevant division and department-wide meetings.
• Develop data products in a variety of formats, including tables, graphs, reports, presentations, data briefs, dashboards, and web-based reports.
• With the team, develop and establish departmental standards and guidance for data analysis and presentation.
• Develop and field data collection efforts, including surveys.
• Contribute to manuscript development for peer-reviewed journals

Skills Required:
• Strong analytic skills and experience with R (preferred) or other statistical software (e.g. SAS, Stata).
• Knowledge of and experience with epidemiology or social science research methods, including study design, methodology, and preparation of scientific reports.
• Ability to analyze data, write project proposals, and write technical reports.
• Ability to summarize findings for a variety of audiences, e.g. scientists, policy makers, and the public.
• Interest in using data skills in an applied setting to advance health policy goals. Experience in local government is a plus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Able to work as a team, prioritize and handle multiple tasks and deadlines, work independently, take initiative, and follow projects through to completion.

Education and Experience:
• Graduation from an internationally accredited school of medicine or osteopathy with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy and completion of three years of postgraduate clinical training in internal medicine, preventive medicine, or pediatrics.
• A master's degree with a focus in social science research methods, such as epidemiology, public health, data science, or a related field.
• Two or more years of experience in public health or social science research (can include experience during school).
• At least one year of clinical experience following completion of a medical degree.
• Experience with interactive data visualization (e.g. Tableau, Shiny, Quarto) a plus.

• Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Department of Public Health.
