Full Job Description
We are hiring a Media Relations Specialist to join Flock Safety's Communications team. In this role, you'll be an important part of a lean but high efficiency team - soliciting stories from customers, drafting press releases, pitching solved crime stories to news outlets, supporting local city press conferences, and building and maintaining relationships with reporters and Flock Safety's public sector customers. This is a fast-paced, high-energy, extremely proactive role that requires a creative, scrappy, problem-solving mindset and the ability to handle a high volume and challenging PR environment. The Media Relations Specialist should display exceptional communication skills, a high attention to detail, and the ability to balance many moving parts. The ideal candidate will be a strong athlete / generalist - with the ability to flex and adapt to many different situations and projects. You should love working cross functionally with colleagues across sales, marketing, product, et al, speaking with customers and reporters, and being a confident and credible spokesperson for Flock. Success in this role requires securing a high volume of positive press coverage each week through tenacity and persistence, and responding quickly with sound judgment to daily media inquiries. The ideal candidate has 4-6 years of communications experience either with an agency or in-house, preferably for a high growth tech company. Direct experience dealing with reporters is required. Strong public speaking skills, as is experience dealing with public sector employees (law enforcement, elected officials, or city/county employees) is also a requirement. This role will report into the VP of Communications and will be remote-based. The Skillset 3 Ability to engage with, develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders. You are comfortable cold calling a customer or reporter to pitch a story and you are not deterred by rejection. 3 Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, familiarity in press release and media pitch writing styles, and a solid understanding of the media landscape. 3 Strong organization and time management skills. You are able to balance a pipeline of multiple projects in various stages of development each week. 3 Self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently and quickly in a fast-moving environment. You meet deadlines, respond to requests quickly, and don't require reminders to accomplish assigned tasks. 3 Ability to receive and give constructive feedback - and act on it quickly. 3 Ability to build trust with internal stakeholders and ensure all priorities are consistently in alignment. 3 4-6 years of public relations experience, either at an agency or in-house. 3 Prior relationships with reporters a plus, prior relationships with public sector employees (especially law enforcement) a plus Feeling uneasy that you haven't ticked every box? The First 30 Days Gain familiarity with Flock's PR process, meet with customers who have done press in support of Flock, onboard onto our PR and media monitoring software, and shadow multiple interviews with comms team members and Chief Communications Officer. End this month with full literacy in Flock's suite of products and media talk tracks for tough questions. The First 60 Days With increasing understanding of the business and the PR process, you will continue to become more autonomous at story sourcing, pitching, media relations and follow-up. You should be honing your pitches to determine what gets the highest rates of engagement/coverages and beginning to source press conferences and announcements. You should be able to handle basic media inquiries on your own. 90 Days & Beyond At this point, you should be fully off and running. You should feel both comfortable operating at Flock and within the External Affairs and Communications teams, and you are confidently representing Flock as a spokesperson. Salary & Equity In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $104,000 and $130,000 as well as Flock Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
