Full Job Description
About the Role

Berkshire Grey is looking for a hands-on Mechatronics Engineer to help design, integrate, deploy, troubleshoot, and improve industrial automation systems. This role sits at the intersection of mechanical systems, electrical systems, controls, industrial networking, machine safety, manufacturing handoff, and field execution.

This is not a pure controls role, and it is not a robot design role. We are looking for a cross-disciplinary engineer who can contribute to the design and improvement of robotic pick cells and surrounding automation systems, with a focus on making cells more reliable, effective, manufacturable, serviceable, and deployable.

We do not expect equal depth in every area. Successful candidates may bring deeper experience in controls, mechanical integration, field commissioning, automation troubleshooting, manufacturing support, cell-level design, or system-level integration, with the ability and interest to grow across the full mechatronics stack.

Candidates may be considered at different levels based on experience, technical depth, and demonstrated ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, integration, and improvement of robotic pick cells and related industrial automation systems.
  • Help define cell layouts, subsystem interfaces, equipment requirements, controls interfaces, safety considerations, and manufacturing handoff needs.
  • Design, integrate, and troubleshoot automation subsystems, including conveyors, motors, sensors, barcode scanners, IO-Link devices, load cells, scales, safety systems, PLCs, and related cell components.
  • Develop and support interfaces between Berkshire Grey automation systems and customer facility equipment, including conveyor systems and third-party controls.
  • Develop, modify, debug, or support PLC-based automation systems, including Siemens systems.
  • Support safety system design, validation, troubleshooting, field verification, and related documentation.
  • Support domestic and international installations, commissioning, acceptance testing, and field troubleshooting.
  • Work with software, hardware, controls, manufacturing, and field teams to diagnose integration issues and improve cell throughput, reliability, serviceability, and deployment repeatability.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for system designs, test procedures, commissioning steps, field issues, corrective actions, and manufacturing handoff.
  • Support manufacturing handoff by documenting build requirements, assembly and test expectations, known issues, and production readiness feedback.
  • For more experienced candidates: lead larger cell design or integration efforts, mentor other engineers, drive technical decisions across disciplines, and help establish scalable engineering standards.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant hands-on experience in mechatronics, industrial automation, controls integration, material handling, robotics, or a related field; or an advanced engineering degree with significant applied experience in automation, robotics, controls, electromechanical systems, or related research.
  • Hands-on experience designing, integrating, commissioning, troubleshooting, or supporting industrial automation equipment.
  • Working knowledge of several mechatronics disciplines, such as mechanical systems, electrical systems, controls, industrial networking, sensors, motors, safety systems, or field commissioning.
  • Experience with PLC-based automation systems; Siemens PLC experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, testing, data analysis, troubleshooting, or engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with common industrial automation components such as conveyors, motors, sensors, scanners, load cells, scales, safety devices, or control panels.
  • Strong practical troubleshooting skills and the ability to work across mechanical, electrical, controls, networking, and software-adjacent issues.
  • Ability to create clear technical documentation for designs, commissioning steps, test results, field issues, and corrective actions.
  • Adaptability, attention to detail, and ownership of assigned work.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally; must be able to obtain and maintain a valid passport.

Additional Helpful Experience

  • Siemens PLC development, debugging, or commissioning experience.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, MQTT, IO-Link, TCP/IP, or similar.
  • Experience with warehouse automation, parcel handling, material handling, robotics, fulfillment systems, or similar industrial automation environments.
  • Experience integrating automation systems with customer facility equipment or third-party conveyor systems.
  • Experience with load cell integration, industrial scales, weighing systems, calibration, signal conditioning, or weight-based measurement systems.
  • Familiarity with machine safety systems, risk assessments, lockout/tagout, safety PLCs, guarding, interlocks, light curtains, area scanners, or standards such as CE, UL, NFPA 70/79, ISO 13849, or IEC 60204.
  • Experience with factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, HMI development, motion control, servo tuning, IO-Link configuration, or field issue resolution.
  • Experience improving engineering processes, test infrastructure, deployment tooling, documentation systems, or cross-functional workflows.

Travel:

Up to 15% travel required both domestic and international.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
