Job Description:

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc., (AMA) is currently seeking to hire a Mechanisms Subject Matter Expert (SME) Engineer with knowledge of polymer chemistry and its uses in mechanism development, to work in our Hampton, VA location. The qualified candidate will be responsible for the development and review of mechanism design, qualification and acceptance test plans and reports, and design and review of polymer adhesives and their application in a space environment. The candidate will also provide support for aerospace flight vehicle mechanism systems, and the test articles used to evaluate and qualify aerospace vehicles. The hardware ranges from manned and unmanned aircraft and space vehicles to individual system components, to test articles, facilities, and testing arrangements supporting these vehicles and their subsystems.

The salary range for this position is $100,000-$150,000. Individual salaries will reflect education and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review of mechanism qualification and acceptance plans and reports

  • Support laboratory testing of structural concepts including mechanical testing of components to generate structural properties, and performing robotic assembly of structures, as needed. Including test design, set-up, execution, data collection, and analysis.

  • Provide CAD design and sizing of components for mechanism systems to be used on spaceflight hardware

  • Provide subject matter expertise in development of joining techniques for achieving assembled structures including design of interfaces and joints, material development, polymer chemistry, manufacturing methods, and testing

  • Develop reports, presentations and other documentation

  • Provide clear comments and guidance for qualification and acceptance plans and reports

  • Attend meetings and teleconferences and be ready to discuss issues seen in design, qualification and acceptance plans and reports

  • Define the load environment of mechanism systems

  • Oversee all testing of mechanism systems


Required Qualifications:
  • For staff level Mechanical Engineers: Bachelor's (or equivalent) with 2 - 4years of experience, or a Master's with 0-2 years of experience in aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering.

  • For senior-level Mechanical Engineers: Bachelor's (or equivalent) with 5 - 7 years of experience, or a Master's and 3 to 5 years of experience in aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering.

  • Knowledge of mechanism acceptance standards for spaceflight applications.

  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry and its uses in mechanism development.

  • ​Demonstrated experience in CAD design and sizing of components for mechanism systems.

  • Ability to travel to testing sites as needed.

  • US citizenship is required.

  • ​Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Creo/ProE mechanism experience preferred

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence is required for this position.
