What you will do

Johnson Controls is hiring! As a Mechanical Test Lab Engineer - 2nd Shift (Monday - Friday 3:30pm - 12:00am)- you will lead product testing across the full test lifecycle-from planning and design through execution, analysis, and reporting. You will play a critical role in validating HVAC/R products, ensuring performance, reliability, and quality standards are met.

This role requires strong technical expertise and a hands-on approach to testing complex systems and components. You will collaborate cross-functionally with product engineering, product management, and lab teams to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable test results. As a contributor, you will also help elevate lab capabilities by mentoring team members and driving continuous improvement in testing processes, tools, and efficiency.

This position is based in New Freedom, PA. Candidates must be commuting distance to the lab, or able to relocate. US Citizens and/or Permanent Residents will only be considered.

How you will do it

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between Test Engineering and internal stakeholders, clearly communicating test plans, progress, and results.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute testing of chillers and related components, including:
    • Collaborating with stakeholders to define and refine test specifications.
    • Translating requirements into detailed test plans, including scope, resources, and timelines.
    • Partnering with engineering, product management, and technical support teams to align on objectives and deliverables.
    • Scheduling tests and managing lab capacity in coordination with Test Engineering resources.


  • Provide hands-on leadership during test execution, including:
    • Guiding test setup, instrumentation, and data acquisition configuration.
    • Monitoring daily test progress and proactively addressing challenges.
    • Analyzing test data, identifying issues, and driving resolution.
    • Delivering clear engineering insights and recommendations based on results.


  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in HVAC/R testing, including:
    • System performance evaluation and diagnostics
    • Troubleshooting test setups and system limitations
    • Interpreting complex data for internal customers


  • Continuously improve testing processes and lab operations by:
    • Developing and standardizing test procedures, methods, and tools
    • Applying engineering and operational excellence methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, DOE, 5S, Kaizen, KPI development, and Root Cause Analysis
    • Identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of testing services


  • Support training and development of lab personnel to strengthen team capabilities and consistency.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - 90,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
