About The Role:

As a Mechanical Project Manager at Z Modular, a division of Zekelman Industries, you will oversee mechanical engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle while serving as a critical liaison between engineering, manufacturing, construction, vendors, consultants, and clients. This position is local to Austin, TX.

What You'll Do:
  • Manage mechanical engineering projects from pre-design through fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of mechanical design deliverables for modular building projects.
  • Oversee the design and integration of HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, hydronic, and related mechanical building systems.
  • Develop and manage project scope, schedules, budgets, milestones, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate mechanical engineering efforts with architectural, structural, electrical, manufacturing, and construction teams.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for consultants, vendors, contractors, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Review mechanical plans, specifications, design calculations, equipment schedules, shop drawings, submittals, and fabrication documents.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable mechanical, plumbing, building, energy, and industry codes and standards.
  • Proactively identify project risks, resolve issues, and implement corrective actions to maintain project objectives.
  • Support equipment selection and coordination of mechanical materials, components, and systems.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, documentation, engineering standards, budgets, and progress reports.
  • Lead design reviews, project meetings, coordination sessions, and issue resolution activities.
  • Support standardization initiatives and continuous improvement efforts related to mechanical design and project execution.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing and field teams to ensure constructability, installation requirements, and project objectives are achieved.
  • Provide technical leadership and project support during fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Perform site visits, field verification, troubleshooting, and project oversight at manufacturing facilities and active construction sites.
  • Communicate project status, schedule impacts, risks, and key decisions to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Champion safe work practices and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.


What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with the ability to obtain licensure in additional jurisdictions.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in mechanical engineering, project management, or a combination of both.
  • Demonstrated experience managing mechanical design projects involving HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, and related building systems.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, consultants, vendors, manufacturing teams, and construction personnel.
  • Strong understanding of applicable mechanical, plumbing, energy, and building codes and standards.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with data center projects, modular construction, integrated skid systems, or prefabricated building solutions.
  • Experience supporting commercial, industrial, multifamily, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar project management credential.
  • Knowledge of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, field installation, and commissioning activities.


Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Successful candidates will demonstrate:
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, and project management software.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering analysis and design tools, including HVAC load calculation software.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, hydronic, and building mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with modular construction methods, prefabrication processes, and constructability best practices.
  • Understanding of sustainability initiatives, energy efficiency strategies, and material selection considerations.
  • Strong project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent technical problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, schedules, codes, and contract documents.
  • Proven collaboration skills and the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
