The Opportunity

This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Advanced Process Solutions (APS) business, supporting a diverse portfolio of industrial, manufacturing, life sciences, chemical, food and beverage, and other advanced process facilities. Mechanical and piping design professionals play a critical role in developing plant layouts, equipment arrangements, piping systems, utility networks, and process infrastructure that help clients optimize operations, improve efficiency, and support future growth.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Lead Engineering Technician (Level 17) will be responsible for leading mechanical and piping design teams in the development of high-quality engineering deliverables for complex process and industrial facility projects. This position performs advanced technical tasks requiring expert-level knowledge of mechanical and piping design principles, industry standards, and best practices. The Lead Engineering Technician will provide technical leadership, coordinate design activities across disciplines, mentor and develop junior staff, and support the successful execution of project deliverables. Responsibilities include creating, modeling, and modifying mechanical and piping systems using industry-standard design platforms such as CADWorx and Hexagon SmartPlant 3D (SP3D), while ensuring compliance with project requirements, quality standards, and client expectations. The successful candidate will also support the development and implementation of design standards, best practices, and model quality initiatives to drive consistency and efficiency across project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Functions in a lead technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisory role
  • Applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline and contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions
  • Utilizes digital design tools and software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) following standardized procedures to create, modifies, and maintains technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
  • Responsible for technical quality, schedule adherence, and budget compliance, while effectively coordinating efforts across departments, teams, and stakeholders
  • May supervise engineering technicians and support staff by coordinating, overseeing, and guiding conceptual and detailed design activities to ensure quality, efficiency, and alignment with project objectives
  • Establishes, communicates, and enforces design and graphic standards
  • Reviews project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content
  • Promotes quality across projects, groups, and sections
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance
  • Ensures that design deliverables are prepared, coordinated among disciplines and issued in accordance with BV Quality Assurance Procedures and project specific procedures
  • Improves integration, coordination, and communication across disciplines
  • Contributes to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes
  • Leads or participates in process improvement and change management initiatives
  • Applies sound engineering fundamentals and established design practices in developing deliverables
  • Exercises judgment, makes work-related decisions, and guides other professionals
  • Coordinates deliverable presentations, delegates production design, or other electronic applications
  • Monitors production to assure consistency, budget and schedule of deliverables
  • Establishes drawing control methods and maintains historical records
  • Programs control systems or participates in other plant start-up activities associated with a specialized expertise area
  • Leads or supports development of new or updated design applications and processes
  • Coordinates with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development

  • May manage multiple discipline areas or groups
  • Communicates project design requirements, progress, and schedules
  • Responsible for determining identification of key client interests and drivers on projects. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns
  • Leads development and communication of design standards and process improvement initiatives
  • Identifies training and development needs and supports personnel development for personnel they supervise
  • Champions development and improvement of project tools and software applications


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology required.
  • Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Typically a minimum of 15 years related work experience.
