The Mechanical Engineer V (Team Manager) is responsible for providing senior-level mechanical design engineering leadership for controllable solid propulsion systems while leading and developing a team of approximately 10 engineers.
The position reports to the Director of Engineering and is part of the Controllable Solid Propulsion department based in Folsom, CA. This role is hybrid or remote and can be based in Folsom, CA, Reno, NV, Huntsville, AL, Long Beach, CA or Remote.
In this role, the essential functions are:- Lead complex mechanical design challenges for solid rocket motor systems, specialized igniters, pressure vessels, actuators, hot gas valves, and rocket thrusters; perform trade-off analyses and drive multidisciplinary design optimization.
- Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and apply and interpret complex Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and statistical tolerance analysis.
- Set up and validate structural, dynamic, thermal, and combustion simulations to address thermal management and structural optimization challenges.
- Apply expertise in advanced metals, refractory metals, ceramics, insulators, composites, and additive manufacturing to support design for manufacturability, welding, molding/casting, and assembly planning.
- Contribute to propellant chemistry evaluation, grain design optimization, advanced ballistics modeling, and combustion/transient response prediction.
- Provide technical direction and programmatic oversight across the mechanical engineering discipline, ensuring alignment of design, performance, and risk with mission and contractual requirements.
- Mentor and develop engineering team members through coaching, feedback, training, and growth opportunities while fostering innovation, collaboration, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing.
- Support resource planning, staffing allocation, annual operating plan and budget inputs, engineering best practices, performance appraisals, and recruitment and hiring as needed; team management duties represent approximately 20% of total job duties.

Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited college/university with at least 10 years of mechanical design experience.
- Advanced technical and organizational leadership skills, with the ability to manage ambiguity and competing priorities.
- Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage executive and customer audiences.
- Strong experience with CAD modeling and technical drawing creation in SolidWorks, including complex GD&T and tolerance analysis.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in the design, development, testing, or manufacturing of controllable solid propulsion systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop diverse, high-performing engineering teams.
- Able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level.
Preferred Qualifications:- Controllable Solid Rocket Propulsion Systems Design experience.
- Experience with functional management of small, highly technical teams.
Travel, Physical, and/or Government Mandated Requirements:- Travel approximately 10% of the time.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level.
