Position OverviewThe Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving custom industrial machinery and mechanical systems. This position works closely with engineering, manufacturing, assembly, purchasing, service, and sales to develop practical, manufacturable solutions that meet customer requirements.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing industrial machinery, automated equipment, OEM capital equipment, or other complex mechanical systems and is comfortable taking designs from concept through manufacturing, assembly, testing, and final implementation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Design and develop mechanical systems, assemblies, components, and structures for industrial machinery.
- Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Develop machine designs from initial concepts through detailed design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and release.
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis to validate mechanical designs, component selection, loads, tolerances, and performance.
- Select appropriate materials, bearings, motors, gearboxes, drives, fasteners, fabricated components, and other mechanical components.
- Design fabricated and machined components with consideration for manufacturability, cost, quality, and ease of assembly.
- Apply appropriate GD&T, tolerancing, fits, and engineering standards to drawings and designs.
- Review customer specifications and translate requirements into practical machine designs and engineering solutions.
- Work closely with manufacturing and assembly personnel to resolve design, fit, fabrication, and installation issues.
- Provide hands-on engineering support during machine assembly, testing, debugging, and validation.
- Troubleshoot mechanical problems and develop effective corrective solutions.
- Evaluate existing machine designs and recommend improvements related to performance, reliability, safety, manufacturability, and cost.
- Create and process engineering changes and maintain accurate engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with electrical and controls engineering to ensure proper integration of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation systems.
- Support Sales, Service, Purchasing, and Production with technical questions and engineering-related issues.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement and product development initiatives.
- Perform other engineering duties and projects assigned.
QualificationsRequired: - Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely relatedengineering discipline.
- 3+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience in a manufacturing, machinery, automation, or industrial equipment environment.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD software, including creation of detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Experience designing mechanical assemblies, fabricated components, and machined parts.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances, and component selection.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, assembly, service, purchasing, and other departments.
Preferred: - Experience designing custom industrial machinery, OEM capital equipment, automated equipment, or material-processing machinery.
- Experience taking machinery from concept through manufacturing, assembly, testing, and production release.
- Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Experience with sheet metal, structural fabrication, welding, machining, and other manufacturing processes.
- Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Familiarity with motors, gearboxes, bearings, conveyors, drives, and other industrial machine components.
- Experience supporting machine assembly and troubleshooting equipment on the manufacturing floor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Successful candidates should be able to combine strong engineering fundamentals with a practical, hands-on approach to machine design. This position requires an engineer who can work effectively both at a computer and on the manufacturing floor.
The Mechanical Engineer must be able to solve engineering problems independently, communicate effectively with manufacturing personnel, manage competing priorities, and develop designs that are functional, reliable, manufacturable, serviceable, and cost-effective.
Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to work in both an office and manufacturing environment. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, or work around industrial machinery while supporting machine assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and development.
