Job Summary

RHI Magnesita is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support our large-scale mining and refractory brick manufacturing operations in York, PA. In this role, you will play a key part in both daily plant operations and capital projects, helping ensure our equipment and structures operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

This position offers a unique blend of structural engineering exposure and project execution, where you'll partner closely with plant stakeholders, engineers, and project managers to support ongoing operations and implement improvements. You will contribute to structural analysis and design decisions, collaborate on equipment and system layouts, and support capital investments across the site.

You will also work on a variety of systems including conveyors, crushers, screeners, bucket elevators, and hydraulic press systems, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working across both mechanical and structural disciplines in a heavy industrial environment.

Essential Job Requirements

Safety
  • Support the development of a strong, proactive safety culture
  • Supervise all project work - with both internal and third-party contractors - ensuring that proper safety protocols and policies are followed


Capital projects
  • Partner with production, maintenance, and safety teams to define project scope, budgets, resources, and timelines
  • Support asset installation and layout development, ensuring designs align with operational needs and safety standards
  • Facilitate bidding and contractor selection processes
  • Coordinate capital project activities while maintaining strong visibility on budget and timeline performance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, fire protection (NFPA), and plant regulations
  • Communicate project progress, risks, and support needs to leadership


Engineering services
  • Collaborate closely with plant stakeholders, engineering teams, and project managers to support operations and equipment reliability
  • Provide technical support for troubleshooting mechanical and structural issues, including repairs to plant structures and equipment systems
  • Contribute to structural analysis and evaluation of platforms, supports, and plant infrastructure
  • Support improvements and modifications to systems such as conveyors, crushers, screeners, and material handling equipment
  • Maintain records of engineering activities and recommend improvements to optimize performance and reduce operating costs
  • Additional duties may be assigned


Education and/or Experience
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a relevant engineering degree like Mechanical or Manufacturing engineering
  • 5+ years of project engineering experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing setting
  • Strong understanding of relevant mechanical equipment operation and machine design; ability to read and decipher schematics and blueprints
  • Finance or accounting experience related to project budget creation, cost analysis, and overall project success reporting
  • Experience managing capital projects


Knowledge, Skills, and General Abilities
  • Working knowledge of structural design principles and structural analysis (Professional Engineer license not required)
  • Experience working with platforms, plant structures, and supporting infrastructure
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Exposure to or familiarity with hydraulic systems (preferred, due to plant press operations)
  • Experience with or interest in refractory, mining, or heavy industrial environments (preferred)
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including operations, maintenance, and project teams
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Hands-on, proactive, and solutions-oriented mindset
  • Experience with OSHA or MSHA requirements preferred
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills


Physical Requirements
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment when required, including helmet with chin strap, vest, gloves, glasses, and steel toe boots
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard, reach, stoop and kneel
  • Light to moderate lifting is required
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. when necessary


Working Environment
  • Very loud plant environment (heavy industrial manufacturing equipment)
