Mechanical Engineer

Location: Ottawa, ON (with periodic travel to CFS Alert, NU)

Position Summary

Nasittuq is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide engineering design, analysis, and technical support for mechanical building systems at CFS Alert. This role supports the ongoing operation, maintenance, and modernization of mission-critical infrastructure in a remote Arctic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering services for mechanical systems including HVAC, fire protection, piping, tanks, pressure vessels, diesel generators, heat recovery systems, potable water, and sewage systems.
  • Develop Task Authorization (TA) project files, including Statements of Requirements, business case analyses, Engineering Change Requests, risk and options analyses, and cost estimates.
  • Prepare complete engineering designs and present projects at Design Review meetings.
  • Conduct commissioning and project close-out activities in accordance with approved project plans.
  • Prepare design calculations, reports, cost estimates, schedules, safety documentation, specifications, and construction packages.
  • Support AutoCAD technicians and collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Review and analyze Preventive Maintenance Programs and support Service Delivery Regimes.
  • Coordinate system spare requirements to minimize outages.
  • Provide engineering support to the Project Coordinator, Site Manager, and third-party contractors (e.g., Defence Construction Canada).
  • Periodically travel to CFS Alert to conduct inspections, investigations, surveys, and site coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Certifications / Licensing
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed in a Canadian province or territory is preferred.
  • Eligible for NAPEG registration.

Experience & Assets
  • Experience with fire protection systems.
  • Experience with power generation systems (engines and generators).
  • Experience with mechanical piping systems (oil & gas, potable water, wastewater, buildings, fuel, boilers).
  • Experience working in remote, industrial, or Arctic environments is considered an asset.

Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and applicable Canadian codes and standards (CSA, API, Environmental Protection Act, Building Codes, HVAC standards, Canadian Water Quality Standards).
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High standards of professionalism and teamwork.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Status Security Clearance.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and possess a valid Canadian passport.
