Full Job Description
Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will provide mechanical engineering support to the Diagnostics Engineering team in realizing diagnostic instrumentation on General Fusion's experimental testbeds. The successful applicant will be an important interface between the teams responsible for diagnostics and the teams responsible for building the LM26 experimental superstructure. Specifically, the engineer will design mechanical, mechatronic and optomechanical systems in collaboration with diagnostic engineers and/or diagnostic physicists. Consulting with stakeholders and coming up with creative solutions for challenging problems will be required. The position is primarily on-site at General Fusion's facilities in Richmond, BC, and may require some shift work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design prototype equipment and components for challenging environments such as constrained spaces, high vacuum, plasma, high voltage, and high shock, related to diagnostics equipment or their interface to the experimental testbed
  • Gather information and define functional and environmental requirements to design mechanical, optomechanical, or electromechanical apparatus to meet the requested needs
  • Build, procure/fabricate, assemble, test, commission, operate, and improve prototype equipment in the laboratory
  • Perform basic engineering analysis and simulations (FEA, thermal)
  • Prepare and maintain thorough documentation of equipment, operating procedures, and test results
  • Contributing to the growth of the team through knowledge sharing and participating actively in design reviews
  • Collaborate within the organization to attain company goals
  • Maintain a clean, organized lab, shop and workspace
  • Prioritize personal and co-worker safety
  • Other tasks as requested

Relevant Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering, engineering physics, or equivalent
  • 2-5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in an industrial or research environment.
  • Experience designing intricate precision assemblies including electronics or optics
  • Experience with DFM and DFA for electromechanical or optomechanical systems
  • A good understanding of standard and exotic materials and fabrication methods
  • Proficiency with basic FEA and thermal modeling

  • Proficiency with 3D CAD design software and working with large assemblies (SolidWorks and PDM)
  • Understand the importance of configuration management
  • Experience with making machine drawings with GD&T and appropriate tolerancing, and procuring parts from vendors
  • Machine shop skills (manual or CNC mill and lathe, waterjet, bandsaw, drill press, etc.) and experience with power tools
  • Familiarity with design and manufacturing using 3D printing (SLA and/or FDM)
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced research and development environment with aggressive deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with stakeholders from various backgrounds
  • Strong, team-oriented safety mindset

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of relevant post-graduate experience in an industrial or research environment.
  • Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments such as high temperature, high vacuum, plasma exposure, high voltage, high shock, and high vibration
  • Hands-on experience with electronics and optics
  • Experience with high vacuum, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Experience with heating and cooling equipment, temperature control
  • Registered with EGBC

The typical hiring range for this position is $78,000 - $95,000 / year. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation including job specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
