Full Job Description
About Multiply Labs

Multiply Labs is a cutting-edge startup based in San Francisco, California, supported by top-tier tech and life science investors such as Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, and Y Combinator. We are revolutionizing the manufacturing of cell therapies by developing advanced robotic systems designed to automate and scale the production of these life-saving treatments. Our robots empower biopharma companies to produce cell therapies at scale without significantly changing their existing processes, reducing regulatory barriers and risks. While traditional approaches are time-consuming and lead to extremely high costs for patients (typically $1M+ per patient), using robotics can make these transformative treatments more accessible and affordable to patients in need. To learn more and to view a video of our robots in action, visit us at www.multiplylabs.com and follow us on LinkedIn. You can also read our latest peer-reviewed study, which highlights the statistical equivalence between manual and automated cell expansion processes, at cytotherapy.org.

About the Role

As a Mechanical Engineer in the Multiply Labs team, you will apply your engineering expertise and technical leadership skills to design consumable components for complex automated machinery involved in the manufacturing of novel pharmaceutical products. This includes the design of robotic cartridges, adapters, and single-use fluid transfer sets that enable robotic interfacing with commonly used consumables in cell therapy manufacturing (fluid transfer bags, bioreactors, cell isolators, reagent vials, etc). You'll be working directly with a cross functional hardware and software team on designing and building the current and next generations of Multiply Labs' robotic systems. This ranges across designing and selecting components for our robotic system, determining high level design goals and objectives, building prototypes and taking them to production. You'll succeed in the role if you can iterate and optimize design using first principle engineering approaches. We have a mix of exciting projects running simultaneously in various phases of maturity. You will need great documentation skills and ability to organize thoughts and ideas into actions in order to drive decision making conversations on major projects while coordinating with colleagues.

Responsibilities
    • Ownership of robotic consumable design including:
    • Concept ideation using first principles knowledge
    • Investigation of applicable technologies and off-the-shelf components
    • Prototyping, material selection, testing, and iterating designs
    • Detailed design work in CAD, including modeling and creation of detailed drawings
    • Analysis of designs including loads, tolerance stack ups, manufacturability, and material compatibility with bioprocess, sterilization, and cleaning
    • Close collaboration with Biology, Product, and Robotic Software teams to ensure your designs meet requirements for the bioprocess and the robotic system
    • Collaborate with technicians to build consumable prototypes in-house for initial engineering validation testing
    • Generation of supporting design documentation and manufacturing instructions
    • Manage design transfer of prototypes to production manufacturing for completed designs
    • Own design validation testing and process validation testing post-design transfer
    • Responsibilities may also include some machine, mechanism, and robot end effector design

Qualifications
    • Mechanical design experience developing bioprocessing consumables and/or medical devices from concept to production, including starting from a 'blank sheet'.
    • Ability to solve complex technical problems by breaking them down into simpler pieces and executable tasks.
    • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical components, common engineering metals, plastics, joining methods, part fabrication methods, and finishing operations.
    • Experience working in 3D CAD software
    • Fundamental knowledge of injection molded part design
    • Basic knowledge of GD&T standards
    • Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field
    • 2+ years engineering experience in a relevant/similar field

Nice to Haves
    • Experience working in FDA and/or EMA regulated industries
    • Familiarity with medical/biopharma material selection for sterile, single-use assemblies
    • Onshape experience
    • Hands on experience with machine shop and prototyping tools

Travel
    • While our headquarters is located in San Francisco, CA, this position may require up to 10-20% domestic and international travel.

Benefits
    • 401K with 4% company match
    • Health Insurance
    • Dental Insurance
    • Vision Insurance
    • Life Insurance
    • Partial Health Insurance for Child Dependents
    • HSA/FSA
    • Twice weekly catered lunch (for team members in SF office)
    • Pre-tax Commuter Benefit
    • 10 Paid Holidays
    • Flexible PTO
    • Paid Parental Leave

    • Multiply Labs will review the benefit offerings periodically and the benefit options are subject to change to meet employee and business needs.
