Step into a pivotal leadership role at Dewberry, where your expertise will shape the future of mechanical engineering and drive innovative solutions for our Orlando office as the Mechanical Discipline Manager!

 

This position is based in Dewberry’s Orlando, Florida office, which currently houses over 150 personnel providing transportation, water, land development, and architectural services.

 

From high-performance buildings and healthcare facilities to water and wastewater treatment systems, energy sustainability projects, and resilient microgrids, you’ll help deliver the innovative solutions that have made Dewberry a trusted partner for universities, healthcare systems, utilities, government agencies, and industrial clients nationwide.

 

As a Mechanical Discipline Manager, your primary responsibility will be to lead the design and specification of HVAC, central utility plant, thermal distribution, and other mechanical systems.  You will provide oversight and technical guidance to design staff including junior engineers and designers.  This position includes operational leadership of the mechanical team, including direct supervision of mechanical team members, project scope and fee development, labor scheduling and task assignment, and assisting recruiting staff in team development.  The Discipline Manager will regularly interface with clients and will team with Dewberry management and marketing staff to develop and execute growth strategies.

 

Responsibilities

 

The Mechanical Discipline Manager has overall responsibility for mechanical team leadership and technical execution of design projects.  Regular tasks include the following.

 

  • You will be the primary technical resource responsible for mechanical engineering design and deliverables. This may include acting as EOR, assigning tasks to and overseeing mechanical staff, and addressing owner, project manager, and permit comments.
  • Provide technical and quality oversight of all mechanical work. Provide QAQC of deliverables.
  • Establishing/improving mechanical design approaches and standards.
  • Oversee and provide mechanical engineering services to support project construction.
  • Assist Project/Client managers with project scoping and fee development.
  • Manage project scope, fee and schedule pertaining to mechanical discipline.
  • Represent Dewberry in meetings with clients, owners, contractors and AHJ’s in support of project mechanical scope. Coordinate with all disciplines involved in a project, including outside consultants.
  • Assist Dewberry recruiting staff in identifying, interviewing and recruiting mechanical staff.
  • Organizing mechanical staff in a way to allow career advancement, professional development, quality client service, and operational efficiencies to meet business and project financial goals.
  • Schedule for the mechanical department/staff including:
  • Project assignments and priorities
  • Delivery due dates for group project commitments
  • Workload/Capacity 
  • Annual evaluations for each direct report.
  • Simply put – Develop and lead our Florida mechanical engineering team.
Required Skills & Required Experience
  • Licensed Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Significant technical experience in one or more of the following: HVAC system design, central utility plant design, thermal distribution system design (chilled water, steam, heating hot water, etc.), control system design and commissioning.
  • Experience across the full project life cycle is a plus, including marketing assistance, project scoping, design, construction support, commissioning and project closeout.
  • Experience should include technical oversight of multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience overseeing direct reports is desirable.
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
