Full Job Description
Exciting opportunity for an engineer supporting structural and mechanical design on a variety of projects within NASA Marshall Space Flight Center's Structural & Mechanical Design and Fabrication Branch. Supporting multiple projects, our engineers produce vehicle subsystem designs that will support successful completion of NASA's exploration goals. Work with a team of engineers and structural analysts to release engineering drawings and manufacture flight hardware. Develop detailed fabrication and assembly drawings and provide fabrication support to manufacturing personnel.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Concept design of structures and mechanisms
  • Creation of CAD models and fabrication drawings including application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Basic analysis of structures and mechanisms for feasibility evaluation
  • Collaboration with other discipline teams across the given project (e.g. Stress, Materials, Safety, Avionics, etc.)
  • Participation in regular coordination meetings with NASA engineers, stakeholders, and outside vendors
  • Support aggressive delivery schedules to support design reviews and manufacturing plans

REQUIRED EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution
  • At least 5 years of experience, or a master's degree with at least 3 years of experience
  • Proficiency in Creo/Pro-Engineer or Siemens NX 3-D modeling and 2-D drafting
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M-1994) and experience applying GD&T to fully dimensioned production drawings.
  • General knowledge and application of Statics and Dynamics


DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Familiarity with handling CAD and drawing configuration management processes (Windchill or Teamcenter)
  • Working knowledge of typical mechanical design material selections
  • General understanding of manufacturability and design fabrication practices for flight hardware
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility and ability to juggle multiple projects
