Full Job Description
Location: Berkeley, CA
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of fire suppression systems for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role will be responsible for creating complete 3D models and 2D production drawings for fire suppression system components and assemblies, integrating off-the-shelf equipment, and supporting the release of manufacturing-ready engineering documentation.
The engineer will work closely with Integration Engineers and Mechanical Engineering Team Leads to develop designs that support quoting, procurement, manufacturing, quality control, assembly, and regulatory compliance for deployment across multiple energy storage projects nationwide.
Responsibilities
• Develop complete 3D CAD models and assemblies using SolidWorks for fire suppression systems deployed within BESS installations.
• Design and integrate:
• Enclosures, doors, and utility pass-throughs
• Component mounting provisions
• HVAC mounting and integration
• Internal and external piping systems
• Valves, nozzles, and clean-agent release systems
• Fire suppression cylinders and release modules
• Internal and external wiring harness routing
• Mounting provisions for piping, harnesses, detectors, horns, and manual release assemblies
• Generate detailed 2D manufacturing drawings with appropriate GD&T, dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication requirements.
• Create and maintain engineering documentation including:
• SolidWorks part and assembly files
• STEP files
• Manufacturing drawings
• PDF drawing packages
• Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure designs meet product, manufacturing, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Incorporate design review feedback and release final documentation for approval.
• Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) initiatives.
• Participate in design reviews and technical discussions with cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• 3+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial equipment, energy systems, automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, or similar engineered products.
• Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, including:
• Part modeling
• Assembly design
• Drawing creation
• Configuration management
• Experience producing manufacturing-ready engineering drawings and documentation.
• Experience working with sheet metal, fabricated structures, piping systems, or enclosure design.
• Familiarity with GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
• Experience integrating off-the-shelf mechanical and electromechanical components into larger systems.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Bonus Qualifications
• Experience with fire suppression systems, HVAC systems, fluid distribution systems, or industrial piping.
• Experience in battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable energy, power generation, or electrical infrastructure projects.
• Knowledge of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles.
• Experience creating STEP files and managing released engineering data packages.
• Familiarity with regulatory or safety-critical equipment design.
• Experience working in a fast-paced product development environment.
Salary Range:
• $100,000-120,000
• The actual salary offered is dependent on various factors including, but not limited to, location, the candidate's combination of job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience
