This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level .

This is an opportunity to be part of the first new weapon system program in over 30 years. Q-20, W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group, defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the newest Navy sub-launched ballistic missile weapon program. We support the DoD/Navy SSP and DoE/NNSA customers in defining the mission need and corresponding technical and programmatic requirements. The W93 collaborates closely with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Lockheed Martin Space design agencies, developing the re-entry system, ensuring safe, secure, & reliable warhead performance and a relevant nuclear deterrent. Q-20 also incorporates the production agency teams (KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL) tightly into the design, qualification, and realization processes.

Q-20 is seeking an early-career Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) to support the development and implementation of digital engineering capabilities across the W93/Mk7 development effort. This position offers an opportunity to work with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop, maintain, and apply system models that support requirements management, architecture development, interface definition, design analysis, and system verification activities.

As an R&D Engineer, you will work closely with systems engineers, designers, subject matter experts, and program stakeholders to develop model-based representations of complex systems and enable data-driven engineering decisions. We are looking for a collaborative engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, learning new methodologies, and contributing to the Laboratory's digital engineering transformation.

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 1 $96,600 - $158,000

Ideal applicants will have experience in the following areas:
  • Developing and maintaining SysML-based models that capture system requirements, behavior, structure, interfaces, and verification relationships
  • Supporting systems engineering activities including requirements analysis, architecture development, interface management, and technical baseline development
  • Applying MBSE methodologies and best practices to improve engineering rigor, traceability, and communication across stakeholders
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to collect, organize, and model technical information
  • Generating model-based artifacts, technical documentation, diagrams, and reports to support engineering reviews and decision-making
  • Supporting model verification, validation, consistency checks, and configuration management activities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary teams


R&D Engineer 2 $106,400 - $176,000

In addition to the requirements listed above:
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and maintain complex system models supporting multiple stakeholders
  • Experience establishing model structures, modeling conventions, and traceability strategies
  • Experience integrating requirements, architecture, interfaces, and verification information within an MBSE environment
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze model data and communicate technical findings to engineering and management audiences
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading small technical efforts
  • Experience supporting technical reviews, audits, and model-based deliverables

Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation. Candidates meeting the degree requirement but not the experience requirement may be considered through an exception process.

Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • MBSE training/Certification (e.g., OCSMP)
  • Experience with SysML and MBSE tools
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, DOORS Next, Jama, or similar applications
  • Knowledge of digital engineering concepts, model governance, and configuration management
  • Familiarity with scripting, automation, or data integration techniques
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
