Summary

Performs advanced obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound examinations utilizing diagnostic sonography equipment in accordance with departmental policies, protocols, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) standards of practice. Operates within the "Practice Standards" and "Code of Ethics" established by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and related professional organizations. Collaborates closely with MFM physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to perform specialized obstetric imaging, including detailed level II fetal anatomical surveys, fetal growth assessments, cervical length evaluations, Doppler studies, biophysical profiles, fetal echocardiography when applicable, and other advanced prenatal diagnostic procedures that may be requested by the MFM physicians. Provides real-time ultrasound guidance and procedural support for invasive prenatal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including amniocentesis and other fetal interventions as appropriate. Demonstrates expertise in imaging normal and abnormal fetal, placental, uterine, and maternal anatomy and physiology to obtain high-quality diagnostic images and accurate measurements. Positions patients appropriately to optimize image acquisition while ensuring patient safety, comfort, dignity, and emotional support during complex or high-risk pregnancies. Obtains and documents pertinent patient history and clinical information to facilitate accurate interpretation and continuity of care. Adheres to infection prevention practices, utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and follows all regulatory and safety guidelines. Recognizes urgent maternal or fetal conditions and promptly communicates findings and activates appropriate clinical response pathways as needed. Supports departmental operations and provides assistance across clinical areas and shifts to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient workflow.

Education

One of the following:
  1. Associate degree or higher in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs; or
  2. Completion of an accredited allied-health program followed by formal diagnostic medical sonography education that satisfies the eligibility requirements of the applicable credentialing organization.

Licensure/Certification

Active Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer credential in Obstetrics and Gynecology by America Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or American Radiologic Technology in ultrasound (ARRT ultrasound). CPR Certification. (Encourage advanced certifications such as Fetal Echocardiography.)

Experience

Required: Minimum two years of experience as a registered sonographer with demonstrated competency in obstetric ultrasound examinations.

Preferred: Three to five years of Maternal-Fetal Medicine or high-risk obstetric sonography experience, including advanced fetal imaging, Doppler studies, and fetal anatomy assessments.

Other Qualifications

Must be able to lift 50 lbs., 100 lbs. shared lifting. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of general computer skills and applications. Must be able to take call. Demonstrate ability to multi-task and work independently using critical thinking skills.
