Position Summary: The Materials Engineer will be responsible for developing, processing, and testing a wide range of products and raw materials. Will work with metals, ceramics, plastics, composites, and other substances to analyze and perform problem-solving when needed. Has acquired and demonstrated valuable knowledge and significant experience to work independently. Supports project teams or works on projects under minimal guidance of manager to develop new products or to enhance existing ones. Solves problems related to choice or performance of materials (i.e. failure analysis, investigation). Problems are generally related to issues of materials supplied (i.e., defects in incoming raw materials or components); to design, manufacturing and/or assembly at Swagelok; and to performance of Swagelok components.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: - Works well independently and supports project teams or works on projects under minimal guidance of Manager.
- Collaborate with Materials Science teammates to solve technical issues and advance the Swagelok materials advantage.
- Prepares/writes technical reports to document solutions and recommendations.
- Advises others in the company how to solve materials-related problems.
- Demonstrates familiarity with properties for a wide range of materials (metals and non-metals).
- Demonstrates an awareness of current developments in areas of expertise.
- Uses appropriate tools to establish relationship between microstructure-property-performance for materials and products.
- Uses appropriate software tools to analyze data.
- Can lead smaller team efforts to solve problems that involve multi-departmental or interdisciplinary effort.
- Demonstrates an interest in industry standards and organizations (e.g., ASTM, ASME, ISO/EN) that will be used to create/revise internal material specifications and procedures.
- Identifies and recommends new laboratory equipment and software needs; initiates activities leading to purchase (i.e., conducts cost-benefit studies, creates/submits P.O. requests, etc.)
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: Required: - BS degree in engineering plus appropriate continuing training (materials science preferred)
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience or developmental experience in a professional position
Skills - Handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Applies reason and logic in problem solving.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Good computer and typical office software.
- Demonstrates very good skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, and other common engineering disciplines.
- Demonstrates broad understanding of properties of a wide variety of materials, including metals and polymers, and efficiently applies knowledge to problem solving.
- Has developed good understanding of functionality of Swagelok products.
