Full Job Description
Position Overview:

As our Materials Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring materials selected in design, analysis, and prototyping activities for new nuclear systems are compatible and acceptable.

Location:

On-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office

Your Day to Day as a Materials Engineer:
  • Perform materials engineering duties in support of procurement, fabrication, joining and testing of raw material commodities.
  • Provide innovative, technically significant, and economically critical material solutions in support of design and manufacturing of components.
  • Oversee activities associated with material characterization.
  • Perform failure analysis activities and identify failure modes of materials.
  • Prepare material performance specifications.
  • Prepare material evaluations and specifications for use in additive manufacturing applications.
  • Communicate material related technical concepts across all levels of the organization and with the customer.
  • Provide direction to weld development activities related to material issues.
  • Work with design and manufacturing engineering to resolve materials joining, machining and processing issues before and during manufacturing.
  • Develop, maintain and apply materials and material solutions to meet project thermal, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and chemical requirements.


Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering (i.e. Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or similar discipline) or physics is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a metallurgical/materials/manufacturing engineering environment is required.
  • Must have relevant engineering experience along with technical expertise and communication skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities simultaneously.
  • Must have additive manufacturing experience.
  • Must have hands-on experience and ability to work in a laboratory environment
  • Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • 8+ years' experience working in a metallurgical/materials/manufacturing engineering environment.
  • Experience with power plant materials (carbon steel, stainless steel, Inconel alloys) in nuclear applications (e.g., radiation environment).
  • Experience with superalloys and/or refractory metals.

Pay: $76,000.00 - $119,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $76,000.00 and $119,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
