JOB DESCRIPTION

The Analytical and Materials Characterization Group within the Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking two Materials Scientists with a background in characterization techniques. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to lead research and development activities related to the processing, science, and characterization of actinides. The ideal candidate would have a strong background in materials, a wide variety of characterization techniques, and experience handling actinides.

In this role, the candidates will work in a small high-performance team, demonstrate effective communication with others, and apply technical expertise in his/her field of specialization to solve complex scientific and engineering problems.

Successful candidates will also be able to assist in project planning and have demonstrated experience with preparing technical documents.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:
  1. Lead and contribute to research & development to deliver creative and innovative solutions to complex scientific and engineering problems.
  2. Develop research proposals aligned to SRNL's core competencies as well as manage technical and programmatic aspects of successfully won projects.
  3. Mentor junior scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and student interns.
  4. Contribute to intellectual property through research proposals, publications, and technical reports.
  5. Maintain a national presence at technical meetings, both internal to DOE and through professional organizations.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering with 5-7 years related experience.
  • For ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance, US Citizenship is legally required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in materials science & engineering, metallurgy, chemistry or related field.
  • Established research record in a relevant field as evidenced by a publication record of technical reports, peer -reviewed articles, presentations, and/or granted patents.
  • Experience with actinide metals or alloys.
  • Experience with a variety of materials characterization analysis techniques (e.g. XRD, SEM, Auger, Microprobe, Optical Microscopy, STA).
  • Advanced communication skills involving complicated topics
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Analytical and Materials Characterization Group is part of the Plutonium Technology Divisions performing engineering development and scientific research focused on advancing the nation's nuclear deterrence. These activities support several NNSA missions and include design, fabrication, and testing of one-of-a kind prototype systems, supporting analytical and material characterization measurements, investigation of novel compositions for solidifying and disposing of aqueous wastes, and utilization of computational modeling and advanced manufacturing methods to streamline future operations, increase quality, and minimize waste. The Plutonium Technology Division is looking for people who can use their talents and experience to assist in growing its plutonium science and engineering portfolio and deliver the highest quality programs to its customer.

Weapons Production Technology (WPT) is a world leader in tritium fuel cycles with a strong industrial partnership, including most private companies working on fusion research. WPT also leads the Tokomak Exhaust System Development Project for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.
