Overview:

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer who will focus on facilitating the technical and administrative interface of manufacturing and fabrication. The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) will facilitate the process to determine internal or external fabrication. This process includes evaluation of design, submitting RFQ's/awarding of projects, maintaining schedules/records, along with any other duties required for the projects. The ME will serve as the liaison between customers and the fabrication facilities (internal or external). The successful candidates should have knowledge of different trades such as welding, sheet metal, machining, millwrights/boilermakers, and pipefitting. This position resides in the Fabrication Services Group in the Fabrication, Instrumentation and Inspection Division, Facilities and Operations Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Partner with customers to evaluate designs for manufacturing needs, understand scope, review drawings and material selection as well as any other necessary information related to the projects.
  • Monitor the fabrication process from inception to installation, ensuring that the product or service meets customer requirements; monitoring/prioritizing the task/project within scope, scheduling, budgeting, and responding to any issues.
  • Responsible for completing all pertinent project documentation.
  • Use their knowledge of materials and internal/external fabrication capabilities to submit RFQ's, evaluate quotes, award jobs to procure the fabrication services within company guidelines to meet customer needs.
  • Evaluate vendor performance to ensure capability and compliance with applicable procedures/standards.
  • Support procurement process for fabrication needs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a variety/level of ORNL staff.
  • Ability to read Manufacturing blueprints.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or similar field of study.
  • A minimum of five years manufacturing experience or fabrication experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a company issued credit card is required.
  • Regional travel is required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tennessee driver's license.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A working knowledge of both federal and Department of Energy (DOE) regulations, specifically those that pertain to fabrication environment.
  • Strong organizational skills - proven record in managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.


Special Requirements:
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a credit worthiness review and obtain and maintain a company-issued credit card.
