Job Description:

Plans, implements, and manages policies, procedures, competencies, educational activities, and quality assurance programs related to the acquisition, decontamination, storage, and sterilization of reusable surgical instrumentation and other medical equipment. Maintains record-keeping systems for activities such as processing instruments and equipment, specifications for instruments, assembled trays, quality assurance, case carts, and materials output. Provides consultation to supervisors in resolving complex administrative issues and offers leadership and oversight to supervisors, coordinators, and technicians. Serves as a resource to the surgical services team and healthcare facility systems committees regarding sterilization processes and procedures, assisting in changes as needed. Establishes and maintains liaison with operating room associates, physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other professional associates to provide consultation on product specifications and advises on the availability of materials for specific patient care and treatment procedures. Maintains liaison with representatives of local, regional, and national sterile processing providers and regulatory agencies to establish a resource for current trends and regulations within the service. Reviews and improves standards on an ongoing basis and serves on intra- and inter-departmental committees related to organizational objectives. Seeks opportunities to promote the vision, mission, and value of the organization by serving in leadership positions on committees. Provides leadership support to system hospitals, serves as a resource to enhance customer satisfaction, achieves optimal utilization, and reduces costs. Assists in the evaluation of new products and patient equipment through membership on various committees. Establishes and maintains sterilization, safety, and security standards, and policies and procedures for sterile processing to ensure compliance with state and local regulations. Manages various personnel actions, including hiring, promotions, transfers, performance appraisals, recognition programs, and scheduling time off. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements. [Required]
• Knowledge of AAMI, IAHCSMM, OSHA, TJC, HFAP, AORN, and relevant infection prevention standards. [Required]
• Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and medical supplies including Anesthesia related supplies. [Required]
• Ability to manage stresses and handle challenging situations and personalities. [Required]
• Computer knowledge and skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. [Required]
• Knowledge or experience with computerized instrument tracking systems. [Preferred]
• Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. [Required]
• Highly developed communication, interpersonal, and customer relations skills for interacting effectively with staff at all levels and the public. [Required]
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate leadership capabilities. [Required]
• Thorough knowledge of sterilization, surgical techniques, instruments, patient care equipment, and processing systems and equipment. [Required]
• Advanced knowledge of sterile processing principles and medical terminology. [Required]
• Capable of lifting 35 lbs. independently. [Required]
• Critical thinking skills. [Required]
• Experience with OR Circulator and knowledge in multiple specialties preferred. [Required]
• Familiarity with AORN standards. [Required]
• Ability to work a varied schedule, including night and weekend hours. [Required]
• Must have the skills necessary to address age-appropriate considerations relating to communication and safety needs of patient populations served. [Required]
