Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of Global Taxation in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
  • Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Prepare with timely completion of sales tax returns for the Domestic subsidiaries as assigned by the Senior Manager/Director, Sales Tax.
  • Coordinate with the Finance teams and business line contacts to compile and manage the information required for the sales tax returns for the Bank and domestic subsidiaries.
  • Assist the Senior Manager and Director in managing sales tax audits conducted by the tax authorities for the Bank and its domestic subsidiaries. Specific responsibilities include compiling related supporting documentation.
  • Assist the Senior Manager and Director in providing sales tax advice to the business units.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual sales tax returns and annual information returns of 6-7 domestic subsidiaries (both regulated and non-regulated entities).
  • Compile relevant data on intercompany and cross border transactions and calculation of tax liability with respect to these transactions.
  • Be required to communicate/interact with representatives of the Canada Revenue Agency and various provincial tax authorities.
  • Champion a high-performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years' practical work experience in Commodity/Indirect Tax.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to prioritize tasks with overlapping deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power BI and Alteryx; experience with Oracle PeopleSoft will be considered an asset.
